The objectives for this course included:

  1. Examine public health and nursing theories that influence public health nursing practice and research.
  2. Evaluate public health nursing with respect to preparation, role, scope of practice and policy focusing on population health.
  3. Utilize Healthy People 2020 objectives to target health disparities in a community.
  4. Interpret demographic, epidemiologic and statistical data to determine health status of an at risk population; then, develop evidence based nursing interventions for this population. 
  5. Determine social, cultural, political, economic, legal, ethical and spiritual factors that influence nursing care of populations.
  6. Utilize information and other technologies to improve access to health information, prevention strategies, and self-care focusing on population health.
  7. Discuss the impact of emergent diseases on global health and bioterrorism.
  8. Examine the role of public health nurses in disaster preparedness.
  9. Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of select primary, secondary, and tertiary nursing interventions focusing on population health.
