BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ACCOUNTING

 

 

To prepare for any business career, a strong foundation in accounting will provide the variety of skills necessary to succeed in today's complex financial world.  An accounting degree prepares you for entry into the fields of public, managerial, industrial, or governmental accounting, with strong potential for career advancement.  The rigorous and comprehensive accounting curriculum at UCF focuses on the real-world challenges of accounting, emphasizing problem solving, information analysis, and application of contemporary information technology. 

 

The School of Accounting at UCF employs 24 full time quality faculty members who are dedicated to their teaching efforts.  The baccalaureate program in accounting is designed to provide basic conceptual accounting and business knowledge as a foundation for accounting career development.  A Bachelor of Science degree is awarded upon the successful completion of 120 hour course curriculum.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 

SUMMER HOURS

Please note that 9 Summer Semester hours are required for students entering the University of Central Florida with less than 60 earned semester hours.  In general, Summer classes are offered in a six week session beginning in May, followed by a second six week session beginning in June and an eight week session (College of Business Only) also beginning in May.

 

REQUIRED GPA FOR ADMISSION TO SCHOOL

Students seeking admission to the School of Accounting are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the Primary core Classes, with a B or better in the ACG 3131 course.

 

REQUIRED GPA'S FOR GRADUATION

Students must achieve the following minimum grade point averages:

            2.00 Average Overall          

            2.00 Average UCF

            2.00 Average College of Business Courses

            2.75 Average Accounting, Tax and Law Courses

            2.75 Average Upper Level Accounting and Tax Courses to remain in the major

            Also, students must earn a "C" or higher in all accounting, tax, and law classes.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Accounting majors, including AA transfers, must take a course in each of the following areas:

  •  English communication arts including written composition
  •  Oral Expression
  •  Behavioral science such as psychology, anthropology, and sociology
  •  Humanities
  •  Political environment of business and society such as political science, public        administration, and ethics
  •  CGS 2100 Computer Fundamentals for Business Applications

 

 

 

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

The School of Accounting has five active student organizations: the Student Accounting Society, Beta Alpha Psi, (the national honorary professional fraternity), the National Association of Black Accountants, and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance & Accounting and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.  Eligible accounting majors are encouraged to join these organizations as they offer very beneficial insights into academic life and the accounting profession.

 


ADVISING

Undergraduate academic and career advising for the College of Business Administration takes place in the Office of Professional Development, BA2 101.  For additional information on accounting and accounting career information, contact Marcye Hampton in the School of Accounting at 823-5678.

 

All students are encouraged to seek advising from a faculty member in the School of Accounting.  Advising and office hours are posted at the beginning of each term at each faculty members' office.  Transfer students should contact the Office of Professional Development for their initial advising session.

 

 

EVENING CLASSES

In general, undergraduate accounting, tax and business law courses are offered in the evening during the Fall and Spring semesters.  Standard evening courses are scheduled one night a week. Summer Term evening courses are based upon availability.

 

 

 

GRADUATE SCHOOL

 

 Master of Science in Accounting

 

The Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) degree program prepares individuals for careers as professional accountants and consultants in public accounting, financial institutions, government, industry, and nonprofit organizations. The MSA degree, along with the appropriate prerequisite work from an undergraduate degree in accounting, satisfies the education requirements to become a licensed CPA in the state of Florida.

 

The Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) degree is awarded upon satisfactory completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours, and a final written exit exam. In the total program of study a minimum of 21 credit hours of the course work must be completed in accounting/tax courses. Students, with the assistance and approval of the program adviser, may select other courses that reflect their interests and career objectives.

 

In addition to the general UCF graduate application requirements, applicants to this program must provide:

  • One official transcript (in a sealed envelope) from each college/university attended.
  • 3.0 GPA in upper-division accounting and tax courses.
  • Official, competitive GMAT score taken within the last five years.
  • Résumé.

 

 

Masters of Business Administration

 

Admission Requirements

 

     Admission requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate study, and a minimum of 2 years of professional full-time work experience.   Applications are generally due by July 15 for entry into the program which begins each Fall term. 

 

  


CPA REQUIREMENTS

 

 

The requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant vary from state to state.  Students are encouraged to contact the state in which they wish to practice in order to obtain the requirements that they must meet.  The toll free number to obtain information about each state's requirement is 1-800-CPA-EXAM.

 

Nationwide, the exam is offered on a continual basis the first two months of each quarter throughout the year.

 

FLORIDA requirements for Licensure are as follows:

 

1) A bachelor's degree and a minimum of 150 semester hours.

2) Earn 36 hours in accounting courses past principles covering all accounting areas.

3) Earn 39 semester hours in business, including 6 hours in business law.

4) Earn75 hours of upper level business & accounting courses, (the combination of the 39 general business and the 36 accounting).  Upper level is defined as a 3000 or higher course.  However, Introduction to Macro and Micro Economics, Business Law 1, Introduction to Statistics, and Introduction to Computer Information Systems count toward the 75 upper division hours even if they do not have a 3000 number.  Other upper level courses taken at a community college do not count toward the 75 upper level hours.

5) One year of Work Experience.

 

FLORIDA requirements to sit for the exam are as follows:

 

As of January, 2009, you may now sit for the exam once you have achieved:

1) 120 semester hours

2) 24 hours of upper level Accounting covering all accounting areas

3) 24 hours in business, including 6 hours in business law.

 

You would still need to complete all the requirements above, however, to apply for the CPA license.

 

 

 

   Students with a bachelor’s degree from a non-accredited or international institution may have to meet additional educational requirements.

 

    A student may complete the requirements to sit for the CPA exam in Florida by pursuing the Masters of Science in Accounting, Masters of Science in Taxation, or Masters of Business Administration.  Most Masters of Business Administration students, however, must take additional course work beyond the degree requirements to meet exam eligibility requirements.  Students must satisfy the catalog course prerequisites to enroll in graduate accounting courses. UCF Accounting BSBA Graduates

 

 

    In general, students who graduate with a BSBA degree in accounting at UCF will qualify to become a CPA in Florida if they:

 

  •  Earn a total of 150 hours
  •  Take 12 additional accounting hours.  Due to topics covered on the CPA exam, CPA candidates are encouraged to include Advanced Tax Topics and Advanced Auditing in the additional hours.
  •  Complete BUL 5332 Advanced Business Law Topics
  •  Earn a total of 75 hours of upper level business and accounting

CERTIFIED MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANT

 

The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) credential is the professional designation for management accountants and financial managers.  The Certificate provides distinction in today's economic climate and is an opportunity to certify your expertise in business areas that are critical to the decision-making process.  Nationwide, the same exam is offered twice a year, on the second Thursday and Friday of May and November.

 

CMA Requirements:

  •   Be a member of the Institute of Management Accountants
  •   Pass all four parts of the CMA examination within a three-year period
  •   Hold a baccalaureate degree, in any area, from an accredited college or university, hold a CPA certificate, or achieve a score in the 50th percentile or higher on either the GMAT or GRE exam.   Students attending accredited U.S. universities may apply when they attain senior standing and will be permitted to take the examination pending receipt of degree.
  •   Complete two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management.

CERTIFIED INTERNAL AUDITOR

 

A Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is an individual who is well-trained and highly motivated in today's competitive business environment.  Nationwide, the CIA examination is offered twice a year, in May and November.  Preparation for the CIA exam requires familiarity with internal auditing subjects, reflects current practice, and encourages a broad knowledge base.

 

CIA Requirements:

  •  Pass all four parts of the CIA examination
  •  Hold a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university. Students attending accredited U.S. universities may apply when they attain senior standing and will be permitted to take the examination pending receipt of degree.
  • Have at least 24 months of internal auditing experience or the equivalent.

 CERTIFIED FRAUD EXAMINER

 

          A Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) is a leader in the anti-fraud community, noted as a specialist in fraud prevention, detection, deterrence, and investigation.  The CFE exam tests your knowledge and expertise in the four primary areas of fraud investigation: Fraudulent Financial Transactions, Legal Elements of Fraud, Fraud Investigation, and Criminology and Ethics.

 

CFE Requirements:

  • Be an Associate member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners
  • Pass all four parts of the CFE examination
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university, or you may substitute two years of fraud-related professional experience for each year of academic study.
  • Complete two years of professional experience in a field either directly or indirectly related to the detection or deterrence of fraud.
