DESCRIPTION: This assignment explores the Autonomous Learner Model (ALM) by Betts. I chose to present the ALM because it aims to better support the social and emotional needs of the gifted with learner-differentiated options. I also like how the ALM provides a gradual shift of the student taking charge of their learning with the teacher becoming the facilitator. Overall, the ALM revolves around gifted students becoming responsible, creative, independent learners. The ALM gives gifted students increased responsibility of their learning along with opportunities to develop positive self-concept, social skills, knowledge in variety of subject areas, and decision making with problem-solving skills (Davis, Rimm, Siegle, 2011, p. 184). This presentation dives into the five dimensions of ALM and provides examples of activities within each dimension. Moreover, this presentation can be presented to other teachers and promote discussions how curriculum offerings may fall short with supporting the social and emotional needs of gifted and promoting independence with lifelong learning.
