Organizing and Presenting Instructional Materials
Once you have identified the instructional materials that align with your course objectives, the next step is to determine how you will organize and present these digital materials in your Canvas course in a way that promotes learning and reduces barriers for all students. A well-designed and organized course benefits all students and proactively addresses learner variability and access issues. For example, students accessing your course on a mobile device or using assistive technology may not have a positive experience if the content is not designed effectively.
Chunking as a Design Strategy
One strategy to help you effectively organize and deliver your content effectively is by chunking the content. Chunking is the process of organizing content into smaller, bite-sized pieces to make it easier for learners to absorb the information. Chunking benefits all students, especially students using assistive technologies or mobile devices. Additionally, chunking may also help support students with invisible disabilities (e.g., ADHD, Dyslexia).
Benefits of Chunking
- Reduces cognitive load.
- Supports information recall and retention.
- Improves readability [meaning it is easier for students to read and interact with content on any device (laptop or mobile)].
- Improves search-ability (meaning it is easier for students to search for and locate information).
Intentional Design: Chunking
We have been modeling chunking for you with the design and organization of the pages throughout this course. On this page, notice several chunking strategies including headings and bulleted lists.
