Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to explore digital technologies available at UCF as well as the third-party tools that are openly licensed for use in digital courses. These tools can help to facilitate the three guidelines of Universal Design for All Learners; technology tools can also help you to provide:
- More than one way for students to demonstrate what they have learned.
- Variety in the types of activities and engagement with the materials.
- Information in various formats (text, videos, websites, etc.)
Steps to Complete this Activity
Reflect on your learning objectives, pick one objective that might be enhanced by technology, and respond to the following discussion question prompt.
âš« DISCUSSION PROMPT: Based on your course discipline and modality, what tool or technology you would like to use in your online or blended course and why? How might this tool or technology reinforce knowledge, encourage engagement, or check for understanding? How might this tool or technology help your learners to achieve their learning objectives?
- Craft your initial discussion post, including supporting details from your own experience or textual evidence from the course content. As you draft your response, consider the following additional questions:
- What are your ideas about new concepts?
- What fears do you have about integrating new technology?
- What excites you the most about new technology?
- How you will set expectations for your learners?
- How you will encourage autonomy and engagement?
- Respond to another post using the Reply section. Consider the elements of where you agree with other posts and where your opinions differ. Note any questions you might have and pose them to the discussion.
NOTE: Unlike the last discussion, when you were broken into small groups, this whole-class space will give you the chance to share ideas with the IDL6543 cohort as a whole.
Submission Details and Grading Criteria
This Canvas Discussion will be graded via a rubric, and the assignment will model a required post and required reply.
- Submit your first post at the beginning of Module 5.
- Respond to another discussion post within the week of Module 5.
Intentional Design: Large Group Discussion
A large-group discussion can mimic the feeling of an in-person discussion by allowing for engagement with the class as a whole. As you participate, consider:
- How it feels to interact in a large-group environment.
- How you can facilitate conversation and also foster a sense of belonging for yourself and your future learners.
- How a dialogue could enhance learning in your course.
Note: Staggering deadlines for an initial post and a secondary reply can help to facilitate discussion by ensuring that all group members have the chance to respond to someone else.
Large group interaction in the online space may also help your students to feel more comfortable speaking and sharing in the in-person environment.
