Now, you’ll be writing a short analysis on a short scene from Sherlock Jr.
The assignment is due by 11:59 p.m on Sunday, January 24th.
Around the time this film was released, in the 1920s, people interested in film and filmmaking organized into cinema leagues to share thoughts and express ideas about the burgeoning theory of motion pictures. You'll be accomplishing a similar thing with this assignment.
Prompt
Write a short analysis of the scene below that makes an argument about how visual details influence the film's story, plot, theme, motifs and/or tone. Use terms from the Yale Film Analysis Guide to aid in the completion of your analysis.
This should be at least 2-3 paragraphs in MLA formatting.
To complete this analysis, find visual details (mise-en-scene, composition, off-screen space) that stand out. Make sure your short analysis has an argument that states your original take on the scene. If you are unsure about how to compose a thesis statement or utilize film terms, remember that we will be building your analytical technique throughout the semester. You can also use the guiding tips below.
You'll be writing about the scene from 13:39-15:52 in the film:

Tips for Success
- Begin by watching the scene multiple times and taking note of visual details that relate to the film prompt.
- Compose a short 1-2 sentence argument at the end of your first paragraph that states your original analysis of the scenes and the supporting claims for your thesis statement.
- Use terms from the Yale Film Analysis Guide to describe cinematic technique.
- Make sure that you focus your analysis on the film's form (specific cinematic technique) rather than content (dialogue, story etc.).
I look forward to reading your analyses! You may review the rubric for this assignment through the "show rubric" option.
