Welcome

Welcome to your final semester of the Health Care Informatics program.   You should feel very accomplished to make it this far through the program, and I know that the end is in sight.  This semester should be fun as we review concepts that you have learned in previous semesters and work toward you to achieve industry credentials. These credentials will help you refine your career path and provide you with evidence of your marketable skills.

University Course Catalog Description

This course serves as a culminating experience for the HCI program.  Students will apply knowledge gained in all classes to an informatics-related area of study.

Course Overview

The ultimate purpose of this class is to tie together all of the information that you have learned in the program.  This class will also prepare you to complete either the CPHIMS or CAHIMS certification upon completion.  The program will pay for you to take one of these exams at the end of the semester, this will serve as your final exam.

Course Prerequisites

Completion of all courses in the PSM- HCI Program.

Required Texts and Materials

  • Preparing for Success in Healthcare Information and Management Systems: The HIMSS CPHIMS Review Course.  OR
  • Preparing for Success in Healthcare Information and Management Systems: The HIMSS CAHIMS Review Course

Supplementary (Optional) Texts and Materials

Available under specific modules

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to:

  • Articulate characteristics and services of different types of healthcare organizations (e.g., hospitals, clinics, and ambulatory centers, community health organizations, research and academic centers, healthcare payers) including their interrelationships, roles, and responsibilities.
  • Evaluate the characteristics of applications commonly used in healthcare (e.g., clinical, financial, consumer, and business intelligence).
  • Analyze the characteristics of technology infrastructure that support the healthcare environment (e.g., network, communications, data integration, privacy, and security).
  • Evaluate the significant components of the systems analysis about IT implementation in healthcare.
  • Describe the project management stages which are most important to the systems analysis phase.
  • Analyze the process of solution selection, implementation, testing, and management.

CAHIIM Competencies and Evaluation

Basis for Final Grade

The grading scale for each certification exam path is located in the module.

Financial Aid Requirement

All instructors/faculty are required to document students’ academic activity at the beginning of each course. To document that you began this course, please complete the following academic activity by the end of the first week of classes or as soon as possible after adding the course. Failure to do so may result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid.

Grade Dissemination

All grades will be distributed through Canvas

Ethics Statement & Academic Conduct Policy

Ethics Statement: As reflected in the UCF creed, integrity and scholarship are core values that should guide our conduct and decisions as members of the UCF community. Plagiarism and cheating contradict these values, and so are very serious academic offenses. Penalties can include a failing grade in an assignment or the course or suspension or expulsion from the university. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with and follow the University’s Rules of Conduct (see http://www.osc.sdes.ucf.edu/).

Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. If you are uncertain as to what constitutes academic dishonesty, please consult The Golden Rule, the University of Central Florida's Student Handbook (http://www.goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu/) for further details.  As in all University courses, The Golden Rule Rules of Conduct will be applied.  Violations of these rules will result in a record of the infraction being placed in your file and receiving a zero on the work in question at a minimum.  At the instructor’s discretion, you may also receive a failing grade for the course.  Confirmation of such incidents can also result in expulsion from the University

Course Policies

Disability Access:

The University of Central Florida is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for all persons with disabilities. This syllabus is available in alternate formats upon request. Students who need accommodations must register with Student Disability Services, Ferrell Commons Room 185, phone (407) 823-2371, TTY/TDD only phone (407) 823-2116, before requesting accommodations from the professor.

Email:

In this class, our official mode of communication is through email. All interaction between student and instructor and between student and student should be respectful and professional. As of 2009, Knightsmail is the only official student email at UCF. Class rosters list Knightsmail addresses rather than external email addresses, and all official class communications will be sent only to the Knightsmail addresses. Students are responsible for checking their Knightsmail accounts regularly. See www.knightsemail.ucf.edu for further information.

Extra Credit Policy:

There is no extra credit available in this course.

Grades of "Incomplete":

The current university policy concerning incomplete grades will be followed in this course. Incomplete grades are given only in situations where unexpected emergencies prevent a student from completing the course, and at least 60% of the coursework has been completed. Your instructor is the final authority on whether you qualify for an incomplete. Incomplete work must be finished by the end of the subsequent semester or the “I” will automatically be recorded as an “F” on your transcript.

Late Work Policy:

Students may make up an assignment for up to 5 days after the due date.  For each day late, a student will lose 10% of their grade.  For example, if a student is one day late on an assignment with 100 points, the highest they can earn is a 90%; if they are two days late, their maximum score is 80%, etc.  The Final Project cannot be submitted after the due date.

Webcourses:

This course is entirely online, and therefore, students are expected to log in and check recent activity in the class at least three times a week.  It is imperative that you read the “Important Messages for Students” as often as possible.  I suggest that you “subscribe” to this discussion posting so that you are notified via email when something is added.  It is highly encouraged that you do not wait until the last minute to submit assignments, technical glitches happen and, if it is not a University problem, students will be held responsible for any late work resulting from this glitches.

Professionalism Policy:

Professionalism is defined “as a professional character, spirit or methods--the standing, practice, or methods of a professional, as distinguished from an amateur” (Dictionary.com, 2014). Behaviors and attitudes required of health professionals are expected of Health Care Informatician students, and include:

  • Utilizing communication skills that are appropriate and effective in relating to peers and faculty. This involves the careful expression of personal opinions and acceptance of constructive criticism, which is intended to promote learning and confidence.
  • Conducting one's self in a manner considered appropriate, legal and ethical by members of the health profession.
  • Assuming responsibility for one's own academic and professional development.
  • Participating actively and demonstrating enthusiasm toward classroom activities.
  • Demonstrating cooperation and understanding to peers and faculty.
  • Striving to progress toward competency and demonstrates this with an adequate level of productivity.
  • Taking responsibility for punctuality and the ability to follow through with tasks.

Anyone that does not demonstrate appropriate professionalism will be counseled and can be removed from the class if behavior impedes the learning of others.

Turinitin.com:

In this course, we will utilize turnitin.com, an automated system that instructors can use to quickly and easily compare each student's assignment with billions of websites, as well as an enormous database of student papers that grows with each submission. Accordingly, you will be expected to submit all assignments in both hard copy and electronic format. After the assignment is processed, as an instructor I receive a report from turnitin.com that states if and how another author’s work was used in the assignment. For a more detailed look at this process visit http://www.turnitin.com.

University Writing Center:

The University Writing Center (UWC) is a free resource for UCF undergraduates and graduates. At the UWC, a trained writing consultant will work individually with you on anything you're writing (in or out of class), at any point in the writing process from brainstorming to editing. Appointments are recommended, but not required. For more information or to make an appointment, visit the UWC website at http://www.uwc.ucf.edu, stop by MOD 608, or call 407.823.2197.
