Student Learning Outcomes

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) are broad long-term aims of the course that describe educational intentions.  These outcomes may not all be achieved by the end of the course; in fact, you may not accomplish them until after the course is over. Each module has learning outcomes that students will work on achieving during the course. This course will enable you to:

SLOs for the course:

Outcome 1: Understand and appreciate theoretical orientations to diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders.

Outcome 2: Gain a greater understanding of human behavior and pathological behavior.

Outcome 3: Develop and/or enhance writing skills and critical thinking skills.

Outcome 4: Identify symptoms of psychological disorders and discuss each disorder in terms of different theoretical approaches.

Outcome 5: Understand treatment options based on theoretical orientation.

Outcome 6: Gain a greater appreciation for empirically supported treatments.

Outcome 7: Gain a greater appreciation for the contribution of past and present research to diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders.

Modules

To keep everyone on track and moving through the course, the content is divided into modules. This course contains one introductory module (Module 0), four course content modules (Modules 1-4). Each of the four content modules will be available for 2-4 weeks. That means you should expect to dedicate a significant amount of time to the completion of each module. Each of the four modules has the same set of assignments: What is Abnormal, How are you feeling, What happens when things are off balance, and Mental health disorders affects all ages. These assignments are described in more detail below. In this course, module weeks will begin at 12:00am on Mondays and will end at 11:59pm on the following Friday.

Course Activities

  • Chapter Quiz (110 points)

  • MindTap Case Study (56 points)

  • Tests (200 points)

  • Case Study Report (100 points)

  • Discussion Questions (80 points)

Activity Submissions

Detailed information and policies regarding the assignments for this course can be found in webcourses.

Attendance/Participation

Because this course is fully online, you are not required to attend class or log into the course at specific times. However, I highly recommend logging in to the course at least twice per week (preferably more often) to check for important announcements, check your Webcourses mail, and keep up with assignments.

As of Fall 2014, all faculty are required to document students’ academic activity at the beginning of each course. In order to document that you began this course, please complete the Syllabus Quiz by 11:59pm EST on 1/14/22 or as soon as possible after adding the course. Failure to complete the quiz by 11:59pm EST on 1/14/22 may result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid.

Make-up Exams and Assignments

Per university policy, you are allowed to submit make-up work (or an equivalent, alternate assignment) for authorized university-sponsored activities, religious observances, or legal obligations (such as jury duty). If this participation conflicts with your course assignments, I will offer a reasonable opportunity for you to complete missed assignments and/or exams. The make-up assignment and grading scale will be equivalent to the missed assignment and its grading scale. In the case of an authorized university activity, it is your responsibility to show me a signed copy of the Program Verification Form for which you will be absent, prior to the class in which the absence occurs. In any of these cases, please contact me ahead of time to notify me of upcoming needs.
