Instructor Introduction
Primary Instructor Introduction - Cynthia Leonhard, MJ, RHIA
Welcome to HSC 3537, Medical Terminology. My name is Cynthia Leonhard and I am the Adjunct Instructor for this class.
In this course we will study the language used in healthcare settings that is common among all disciplines, regardless of hierarchy or job title. Whether a physician, physical therapist, dietitian, medical coder, or nurse, all parties communicate using a common terminology. The fluent use of medical terminology is a fundamental skill needed to communicate safely and effectively in a healthcare setting.
I am originally from Upstate New York on the shore of Lake Ontario. I have lived in Florida for the past 20 years. I am a proud UCF alumni. I received my B.S. in Health Information from the University of Central Florida. I went on to receive my Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law from Loyola University in Chicago, My career path has required me to use medical terminology constantly. As a nurses aid I need to read charts and chart appropriately. Later, I was a medical transcriptionist for a number of years and definitely used medical terminology every day on the job. It required knowing the terms well enough to understand them through heavy accents, background noise and other challenges. For the past 15 years my role my role is as a System HIM Manager with responsibility for health information operations for four hospitals and a large medical group. I am blessed to have a career that I love and enjoy as much as I do.
When I am not working I enjoy learning, reading various genres, photography, music, movies and spending time with my children and grandchildren. I have three grown children and six beautiful grandchildren. I also have a two cats, Midnight and Fenway. Yes, I am a Red Sox fan.
I look forward to a great semester!
