It is very important that you take a few minutes to closely read my syllabus. This is meant to provide a complete description of course information and students tend to be successful when they begin my course with a few dedicated minutes to go through the documentation and make sure you have a clear understanding of the content. Many students find it useful to actually take some notes on things that may be important or that you might like some clarification on. Once you have done so, please make comments on the discussion. If you have a question, it's likely that someone else has the same concern or would benefit from some point you have noted!

Hergenhahn's An Introduction to the History of Psychology by Tracey Henley, 8th Edition

There will be various online supplemental sources provided.

Course Requirements

  • Complete assigned reading and study by the required dates
  • Actively participate in class activities and additional exercises
  • Prepare for quizzes and exams when they are scheduled

Complete assignments on time. Missed Assignments/Make-Ups/Extra Credit

In general, no credit will be given for late assignments or missed quizzes/exams except in instances defined in the UCF policies for excused absences or other extreme circumstances. Students must complete quizzes, activities, and exams prior to the due date/time. No make-up assignment/exams will be given without documentation of a UCF approved excuse or other compelling evidence. According to UCF policy, excused absences include: military service, court appearances, and Official UCF-sponsored activities. For UCF-sponsored activities you must provide an official letter (copy of a signed Program Verification Form) at least 1 week PRIOR to the deliverable due date from your coach, team leader, etc. Additional exceptions include religious observances, severe illnesses, or family emergencies. Official documentation will be required. Students are expected to notify their instructor in advance if they intend to observe a holy day of their religious faith which conflicts with the course schedule. Lastly, birthdays, vacations, weddings, work schedule problems and similar events will not be excusable.

Financial Aid Requirement

All faculty members are required to document students' academic activity at the beginning of each course. In order to document that you began this course, please complete the following academic activity by the end of the first week of classes, or as soon as possible after adding the course, but no later than January 14, 2022. Failure to do so will result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid. Please make sure that you complete the Syllabus Quiz (not graded) in order to satisfy this requirement.

Attendance Policy

This course is completely online and asynchronous. That means there will be no on campus or online mandatory class meeting times. However, there will be activities and deliverables which must be completely by assigned dates. You will be provided with details on each of these with plenty of notice. It will be difficult to do well in this course if you do not complete activities on time and in the order they are presented. Be careful not to fall behind!

Academic Honesty

Plagiarism and Cheating of any kind on an examination, quiz, or assignment will result at least in an "F" for that assignment (and may, depending on the severity of the case, lead to an "F" for the entire course) and may be subject to appropriate referral to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. See the UCF Golden Rule for further information. I will assume for this course that you will adhere to the academic creed of this University and will maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. In other words, don't cheat by giving answers to others or taking them from anyone else. I will also adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity, so please do not ask me to change (or expect me to change) your grade illegitimately or to bend or break rules for one person that will not apply to everyone.

Course Accessibility Statement

The University of Central Florida and I are committed to providing access and inclusion for all persons with disabilities. Students with disabilities who need disability-related access in this course should contact me as soon as possible (you are welcome to talk to me at any point in the semester about course design concerns, but it is always best if we can talk at least one week prior to the need for any modification and more time is always better). Students should also connect with Student Accessibility Services (SAS; Links to an external site. Ferrell Commons 185; 407-823-2371; sas@ucf.edu). Through SAS, a Course Accessibility Letter may be created and sent to professors, which informs faculty of potential access and accommodations that might be reasonable. Determining reasonable access and accommodations requires consideration of the course design, course learning objectives, and the individual academic and course barriers experienced by the student.

Course Accessibility and Disability COVID-19 Supplement Statement

Accommodations may need to be added or adjusted should your course shift from an on-campus to remote format. Students with disabilities should speak with their instructor and should contact sas@ucf.edu to discuss specific accommodations for this or other courses.

Third-Party Software and FERPA

During this course you might have the opportunity to use public online services and/or software applications sometimes called third-party software such as a blog or wiki. While some of these could be required assignments, you need not make any personally identifying information on a public site. Do not post or provide any private information about yourself or your classmates. Where appropriate you may use a pseudonym or nickname. Some written assignments posted publicly may require personal reflection/comments, but the assignments will not require you to disclose any personally identity-sensitive information. If you have any concerns about this, please contact your instructor.

COVID-19 Policies and Procedures

University-wide face-covering policy for common spaces and face-to-face classes

To protect members of our community, everyone is required to wear a facial covering inside all common spaces including classrooms. Students who choose not to wear facial coverings will be asked to leave the classroom by the instructor. If they refuse to leave the classroom or put on a facial covering, they may be considered disruptive (please see the Golden Rule for student behavior expectations). Faculty have the right to cancel class if the safety and well-being of class members are in jeopardy. Students will be responsible for the material that would have been covered in class as provided by the instructor.

Notifications in case of changes to course modality

Depending on the course of the pandemic during the semester, the university may make changes to the way classes are offered. If that happens, please look for announcements or messages in Webcourses@UCF or Knights email about changes specific to this course.

COVID-19 and Illness Notifications

Students who believe they may have a COVID-19 diagnosis should contact UCF Student Health Services (407-823-2509) so proper contact tracing procedures can take place.

Students should not come to campus if they are ill, are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID, or if anyone living in their residence has tested positive or is sick with COVID-19 symptoms. CDC guidance for COVID-19 symptoms is located here: (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html (Links to an external site.))

Students should contact their instructor(s) as soon as possible if they miss class (activities) for any illness reason to discuss reasonable adjustments that might need to be made. When possible, students should contact their instructor(s) before missing class (activities).

In Case of Faculty Illness

If the instructor falls ill during the semester, there may be changes to this course, including having a backup instructor take over the course. Please look for announcements or mail in Webcourses@UCF or Knights email for any alterations to this course.
