Catalog Course Description
This course is designed to prepare B.F.A. students for B.F.A. Exhibition. Must be completed in the student's final semester.
Student Learning Outcomes
This capstone experience course is designed to prepare students for the Biannual BFA Exhibition and provide professional development to prepare you for post-graduation artistic careers. Your participation is the key to making this class a productive and supportive environment – the class offers the chance to have an ongoing interdisciplinary conversation with your peers about art work, studio practices, and motivations for engaging in creative production. We will participate in group discussions and sessions that explore a range of topics relating to contemporary artistic practice and professional development. This course is writing intensive, the writing assignments are strategic in the development of your professional documents.
In this course--now offered in both spring and fall--BFA candidates who are graduating at the end of the semester build and present their group exhibition. Students should only take this class in their final semester of residence at UCF, not one or two semesters early.*Please note we now offer ART4971 Experimental Animation Thesis as the capstone for Experimental Animation students.*
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- You will develop critical writing skills, public speaking skills, research skills, and better articulate the goals behind your studio practice.
- Develop professional documents vital to professional artistic activity and opportunities
- Better understand best practices and professional standards
- Create a 5-year plan to outline post-graduation professional goals
- Exhibit a concise and professional body of work at the BFA exhibition
- Submit to at least three professional opportunities dependent on your artistic practice and education.

- Getting Your Sh*t Together: The Ultimate Business Manual for Every Practicing Artist(2nd edition) by Karen Atkinson & GYST Ink
-
Faculty Mentor– You should already have selected a BFA faculty mentor to guide you through your degree process and artistic practice. You are highly encouraged to meet with your mentor regularly (every 1 – 2 weeks) to update them on your research and progress of your work. You should communicate with your mentor regularly for additional guidance and support with your body of work and professional goals. However, the Instructor of Record and Gallery Director will be selecting exhibited artworks due to: account for adequate spacing to avoid crowding of artwork; sub-par quality of artwork (not ready-to-hang, unprofessional framing and presentation, not complete, not dry, etc.); and/or if prior approvals were not requested (see prior approval requirements).
Webcourses
Regular communication, course documents, and grades will be shared through WebCourses throughout the semester. Webcourses is an online course management system (accessed through my.ucf.edu and then the “Online Course Tools” tab) which will be used as a medium for turning in assignments and a forum for communicating with your teammates. Under the “Discussion” section, you will have a designated forum section. My recommendation is to check Webcourses every 2-3 days for updates from your classmates or myself.
Course Activities
This is a mixed-mode course where we will meet face-to-face as a group every Wednesday from 8:00-9:15am, as outlined in the schedule. Grades of "Incomplete"
Consult the latest Undergraduate or Graduate catalog for regulations and procedures regarding grading such as Incomplete grades, grade changes, and grade forgiveness.
Grades of "Incomplete": A grade of “I” (Incomplete) may be assigned by the instructor when a student is unable to complete a course due to extenuating circumstances, and when all requirements can be completed in a short time following the end of the term. It is expected that the student will have completed a majority of the course. When an instructor assigns an “I” grade for a course, the student is notified through email about the grade. The student is responsible to arrange with the instructor for the completion of the requirements of the course. Effective with Incomplete grades assigned in the Fall semester 1997 and thereafter, a student cannot graduate from the University with an “I” on the transcript. The Incomplete must be changed within one year of the last day of the term attempted or prior to graduation from the University, whichever comes first. Unresolved Incomplete grades automatically will be changed to “F” by the Registrar’s Office. Unresolved “I” grades in courses graded with “S” or “U” will be converted to “U.” In the case of a student’s unsuccessful performance of the BFA Degree Exit Requirements, the graduating degree can be moved from a BFA status to a BA status.
Financial Aid Requirement
All instructors/faculty are required to document students’ academic activity at the beginning of each course. In order to document that you began this course, please complete the following academic activity by the end of the first week of classes or as soon as possible after adding the course. Failure to do so may result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid. Under WELCOME TO ART4935! - Click “Introductory Quiz” and complete the quiz by the end of the first week of classes.
Controversial Content
Since we will be studying art throughout history, there may be times when some of this art may have nudity in it. If you feel uncomfortable with this, please let me know and we can make accommodations.

Email Policy
In this class our official mode of communication is through email located inside Webcourses. All communication between student and instructor and between student and student should be respectful and professional. It is the student’s responsibility to check the “coursemail” tool frequently. You may also wish to create a Knight’s Email account at www.knightsemail.ucf.edu for separate official communication from the university.
In-Class Recording Policy
Students may, without prior notice, record video or audio of a class lecture for a class in which the student is enrolled for their own personal educational use. A class lecture is defined as a formal or methodical oral presentation as part of a university course intended to present information or teach students about a particular subject. Recording classroom activities other than class lectures, including but not limited to lab sessions, student presentations (whether individually or part of a group), class discussion (except when incidental to and incorporated within a class lecture), clinical presentations such as patient history, academic exercises involving student participation, test or examination administrations, field trips, and private conversations is prohibited. Recordings may not be used as a substitute for class participation and class attendance, and may not be published or shared without the written consent of the faculty member. Failure to adhere to these requirements may constitute a violation of the University’s Student Code of Conduct as described in the Golden Rule.
Make-Up Assignments for Authorized University Events or Co-curricular Activities
Per university policy, you are allowed to submit make-up work (or an equivalent, alternate assignment) for authorized university-sponsored activities, religious observances, or legal obligations (such as jury duty). If this participation conflicts with your course assignments, I will offer a reasonable opportunity for you to complete missed assignments and/or exams. The make-up assignment and grading scale will be equivalent to the missed assignment and its grading scale. In the case of an authorized university activity, it is your responsibility to show me a signed copy of the Program Verification Form for which you will be absent, prior to the class in which the absence occurs. In any of these cases, please contact me ahead of time to notify me of upcoming needs.
COVID-19 Policies
University-Wide Face Covering Policy for Common Spaces and Face-to-Face Classe
To protect members of our community, everyone is required to wear a facial covering inside all common spaces including classrooms (https://policies.ucf.edu/documents/PolicyEmergencyCOVIDReturnPolicy.pdf). Students who choose not to wear facial coverings will be asked to leave the classroom by the instructor. If they refuse to leave the classroom or put on a facial covering, they may be considered disruptive (please see the Golden Rule for student behavior expectations). Faculty have the right to cancel class if the safety and well-being of class members are in jeopardy. Students will be responsible for the material that would have been covered in class as provided by the instructor.
Notifications in Case of Changes to Course Modality
Depending on the course of the pandemic during the semester, the university may make changes to the way classes are offered. If that happens, please look for announcements or messages in Webcourses@UCF or Knights email about changes specific to this course.
COVID-19 and Illness Notification
Students who believe they may have a COVID-19 diagnosis should contact UCF Student Health Services (407-823-2509) so proper contact tracing procedures can take place.
Students should not come to campus if they are ill, are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID, or if anyone living in their residence has tested positive or is sick with COVID-19 symptoms. CDC guidance for COVID-19 symptoms is located here: (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html)
Students should contact their instructor(s) as soon as possible if they miss class for any illness reason to discuss reasonable adjustments that might need to be made. When possible, students should contact their instructor(s) before missing class.
In Case of Faculty Illness
If the instructor falls ill during the semester, there may be changes to this course, including having a backup instructor take over the course. Please look for announcements or mail in Webcourses@UCF or Knights email for any alterations to this course.
Course Accessibility and Disability COVID-19 Supplemental Statement
