Enrollment Requirements

  • Prerequisite(s): One year of high school chemistry or CHM 1032.
  • Corequisite(s): None.

All students are expected to have an understanding of basic algebra. Physical constants and/or conversion factors should not be passively memorized as these are typically given on all exams/quizzes. However, since relevant equations are the only items not provided, they should always be learned actively and utilized appropriately in all practice problems, in order to aid in the development of effective problem-solving skills.

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to make chemistry fun, understandable, and relevant to engineering via the investigation of fundamental topics including measurement in chemistry, the theory of atomic structure, chemical periodicity, stoichiometry, types of chemical reactions in aqueous solution, chemical bonding, acids and bases, chemical equilibria, and nuclear chemistry.

Course Materials and Resources

Required Materials/Resources

  • Larry Brown and Tom Holme, “Chemistry for Engineering Students”, 3rd Edition, Cengage, 2015.  ISBN-13: 978-1-285-19902-3.
  • Scientific calculator (e.g., TI-30XA).

Technology statement

Procrastination is the number one reason why work is not completed by the scheduled due date. You must manage your time! Look ahead at your schedule, plan around your busy times, and establish a time to complete your learning and assessment activities. Start your work early. DO your work well before the DUE date to avoid that last-minute emergency or technical situations that may arise to prevent you from completing activities on time. For example, if you are submitting an assignment at 11:50 p.m. on the due date and your Internet connection fails, that is a procrastination issue. It’s Murphy’s Law that problems are apt to occur when you rush. Technology is not an excuse. Make sure assignments are completed in advance.

Zoom Sessions

According to UCF's policy, the lectures will be given face-to-face in the classroom. At the same time, the lectures will also be streamed live via Zoom. Meeting dates and times will be scheduled through Webcourses@UCF and should appear on your calendar. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with Zoom by visiting the UCF Zoom Guides. You may choose to use Zoom on your mobile device (phone or tablet).

Things to Know About Zoom:

You must sign in to my Zoom session using your UCF NID and password. The Zoom sessions are recorded.

Improper classroom behavior is not tolerated within Zoom sessions and may result in a referral to the Office of Student Conduct.

Course Activities

The required course activities are as followed:

  • Weekly schedule will be used to keep you tracking the course progress with scheduled lectures, course materials, and assignments. Before each class, read the chapters in the textbook.
  • The lectures will be recorded and posted on the web course page. Watch the recorded lecture videos if you missed any classes.
  • After each class, do more practice with the end-of-chapter exercise.
  • Exams (including the final exam) are given in the classroom during scheduled class time, and simultaneously given online proctored by Honorlock. All quizzes are given online. Dates and times are located in the tentative class schedule and can change depending on the needs of the course.
  • You will be expected to have daily access to the internet and email since I will be emailing you constantly about assignment updates, additions, and changes. All students at UCF are required to obtain a Knight's Email account and check it regularly for official university communications. Students should plan on a minimum of five hours’ worth of homework outside of class each week or more depending on the needs of the student.

Online Exam Proctor

If you take exams online, Honorlock will be used for proctor. Honorlock is an online proctoring service that allows you to take your exam from the comfort of your home. You do not need to create an account, download software, or schedule an appointment. Honorlock is available 24/7. Items needed: a computer, a working webcam, Google Chrome, and a stable Internet connection.

To get started, you will need Google Chrome and download the Honorlock Chrome Extension. You can download the extension at www.honorlock.com/extension/install Agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy; click “Add Extension”. When you are ready to test, click on your exam. Clicking "Launch Proctoring" will begin the Honorlock authentication process, where you will take a picture of yourself, show your UCF Student ID, and complete a scan of your room. Honorlock will record your exam session by webcam as well as recording your screen.  Honorlock also has an integrity algorithm that can detect search-engine use, so please do not attempt to search for answers, even if it's on a secondary device. Honorlock support is available 24/7/365. If you encounter any problems, contact them via live chat.

Make-up Exams and Assignments

Per university policy, you are allowed to submit make-up work (or an equivalent, alternate assignment) for authorized university-sponsored activities, religious observances, or legal obligations (such as jury duty). If this participation conflicts with your course assignments, I will offer a reasonable opportunity for you to complete missed assignments and/or exams. The make-up assignment and grading scale will be equivalent to the missed assignment and its grading scale. In the case of authorized university activity, it is your responsibility to show me a signed copy of the Program Verification Form for which you will be absent, prior to the class in which the absence occurs. In any of these cases, please contact me ahead of time to notify me of upcoming needs. Emergencies are precisely the purpose of the dropped exam policy. If a student misses an exam due to an excused or unexcused absence that will be the exam that is not counted towards their final grade. No make-up tests, quizzes, so please do not request one.

Assessment and Grading Procedures

The instructor reserves the right to modify the schedule, the testing procedure, and the grading basis if, in the professional judgment of the instructor, such modification is in the best interest of fulfilling the course objectives and assuring the academic integrity of the course and the institution.

Exams will be 50 minutes each with 20 questions and students are allowed a scientific calculator (graphing calculators are not allowed). A timed 170 minutes 40 questions final exam will be given as mentioned in the course schedule. All exams will be cumulative, mandatory, and computer-graded multiple-choice format. A pink scantron and a #2 pencil are required.
