Course Requirements
Assignment Guidelines
There is no published schedule as this course is scenario and module driven. Completion of every assignment is a requirement to advance to the next module or assignment. Late submissions will receive a score of zero. For every writing assignment, I will be grading you on the perceived effort that you give each project. I will be very strict about your writing style. To that end, I will be taking points for spelling, sentence structure and other grammatical errors. Your path to success will include reading the scenario for the semester and understanding who we are as a clinic. Each week, read and understand the incident that has occurred. Make sure that you address all of the issues that I asked you to consider. While attention to detail is important in this class, it is far more important in the “real world”, so why not start now. Any indication in your writing that we are anything but an outpatient clinic will result in a 50% reduction in your grade for that submission.
Your assignments will be graded in the following manner:
- Meeting the page length requirements as well as the formatting guidelines. I put this page requirement in place to discourage meaningless writing (fluff) in your papers. At times it will be equally important to tell me thoughts/resolutions you were considering and you will find it necessary to tell me what you could not find in supporting your decision making. Stating the laws and statutes of certain assignments will be in your best interest.
- Addressing ALL of the issues as presented in each scenario
- Spelling, grammar and sentence structure issues.
- Unless otherwise noted, all submissions will be written and submitted in a Microsoft Word Document (failure to meet any of these standards will result in an immediate 5 point reduction)
- 1 inch margins on all sides
- 1.5 line spacing
- Times new roman 12
Activities Overview
| Activity | Overview | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Syllabus Quiz: | In order to ensure you are familiar with the contents of the syllabus, you MUST complete the Syllabus quiz in week one. | 20 points |
| Welcome Video | This is a short elevator speech video to practice your ability to introduce yourself and identify your career goals to others. | 15 points |
| Self-Assessment | With the “you getting to know you” approach, you will fill out a Leadership/Personal Skills Inventory and submit a written summary addressing the two fill in the blank sections at the bottom of the page. | 15 points |
| Scenarios |
The majority of the class will be scenario driven: I am the Senior Administrator for a Community Based Family Physician’s Group called the UCF Community Care Center (UCCC). We are a for-profit facility, Physician owned, complete with a board of trustees. The premise is that you have just been “hired” to be the Practice Manager. We are open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon. We have 4 Family Medicine Physicians, 2 Physicians Assistants (P.A’s) 1 Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP), 4 Registered Nurses, 1 Lab Technician, 1 Radiology Technician, 4 Medical Assistants and 2 Administrative personnel, 1 Medical Records Technician, 2 Business/Billing staff, one full time patient scheduler and one part time patient scheduler. We are located in a busy section of town and we operate in a 10,000 square foot facility. All full time employees are expected to work 40 hours per week and part time employees are required to work 24 hours per week. We are not doing well in many aspects of the business. Over the next 16 weeks, you will manage scenarios, derived from real work place events and incidents. You will be asked to draw from your knowledge base to provide solutions to problems, ideas for change management, financial analysis, HR management ethical issues and patient privacy issues to name a few. For many of the scenarios, you will find that there is no textbook answer. You will be evaluated by me (as your boss) based on my experiences, and your ability to provide logical insight to problem solving, putting your critical thinking skills to the test. For some issues, (Financial, IT, HIPAA) there will be “right” answers that I am looking for, and information to guide you to success will be included in the Modules as you progress through your 16 weeks of “employment”. You will need to approach each week as a “stand alone” event where these scenarios may be independent in nature and may or may not build on one another throughout the semester. If you wish to respond to that feedback, please do so through webcourses mail. The system does not notify me if you reply to feedback I provide on an assignment. Your scenario responses will be provided to me in a variety of formats to include (but not limited to)

| Book Writing Assignment: |
The reading for this class is “Everyone Deserves a Great Manager”, by Scott Miller, Todd Davis and Victoria Olsson. You will read this book across the course of the semester, and in the last month of the course, using the principles in the book, reflect back on 6 critical practices for leading a team which may have influenced some of the approaches you made in the Community Care Center over the past several months. As this book is your primary resource for this paper, you do not need to make a reference page. However if you draw from other websites or books, a reference page is required. If you quote the author in your paper, please cite it appropriately, giving him the credit. This paper will be 3 full pages in length and must be submitted using APA as your guide. |

Clarification:
Throughout this course, I will tell you to have this document on my “desk” by a certain date and time. Basically, that is the assignment submission date. All submissions are to be done electronically.
Missed Assignments/Make-Ups/Extra Credit
Late Work Policy:
Late assignments will not be accepted, unless previously discussed and approved with the instructor prior to the due date. From a learning perspective, if you want to submit late work for the purposes of feedback, I will do that for you; however, a late assignment will still earn you a grade of zero.

Campus Safety Statement
Emergencies on campus are rare, but if one should arise in our class, everyone needs to work together. Students should be aware of the surroundings and familiar with some basic safety and security concepts.
- In case of an emergency, dial 911 for assistance.
- Every UCF classroom contains an emergency procedure guide posted on a wall near the door. Please make a note of the guide’s physical location and consider reviewing the online version at http://emergency.ucf.edu/emergency_guide.html.
- Students should know the evacuation routes from each of their classrooms and have a plan for finding safety in case of an emergency.
- If there is a medical emergency during class, we may need to access a first aid kit or AED (Automated External Defibrillator). To learn where those items are located in this building, see http://www.ehs.ucf.edu/workplacesafety.html (click on link from menu on left).
- To stay informed about emergency situations, sign up to receive UCF text alerts by going to my.ucf.edu and logging in. Click on "Student Self Service" located on the left side of the screen in the tool bar, scroll down to the blue "Personal Information" heading on your Student Center screen, click on "UCF Alert," fill out the information, including your e-mail address, cell phone number, and cell phone provider, click "Apply" to save the changes, and then click "OK."
- Students with special needs related to emergency situations should speak with their instructors outside of class.
- To learn about how to manage an active-shooter situation on campus or elsewhere, consider viewing this video. You CAN Survive an Active Shooter
We are an online class so we will not meet on campus, however this is a require statement on all syllabus for the University.
University-Wide Mask Policy for Common Spaces and Face-to-Face Classes
COVID Statement
To protect members of our community, everyone is required to wear a facial covering inside all common spaces including classrooms (https://policies.ucf.edu/documents/PolicyEmergencyCOVIDReturnPolicy.pdf). Students who choose not to wear facial coverings will be asked to leave the classroom by the instructor. If they refuse to leave the classroom or put on a facial covering, they may be considered disruptive (please see the Golden Rule for student behavior expectations). Faculty have the right to cancel class if the safety and well-being of class members are in jeopardy. Students will be responsible for the material that would have been covered in class as provided by the instructor.
