Course Prerequisites: Graduate standing and completion of all business and accounting foundation core courses.

Course Description

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the accounting control environment with a particular focus on technology-based processes. The first half of the course will provide a higher-level conceptual understanding of what constitutes a strong control environment, while the second half of the course will consist of a self-directed group project exploring cutting edge accounting technologies.

Required Materials/Resources

This course will be offered face-to-face, but requires internet access, browser, video conferencing (Zoom for office hours) and e-mail skills.  Students will need to be able to access Webcourses on a daily basis to obtain course materials and will need internet access to complete homework assignments and exams.

Zoom: Office hours will be conducted via Zoom to provide greater flexibility and access to your professor. You may choose to use Zoom on your mobile device (phone or tablet).

Turnitin.com:  In this course we will utilize turnitin.com, an automated system which instructors can use to quickly and easily compare each student’s assignment with billions of web sites, as well as an enormous database of student papers that grows with each submission. Accordingly, you will be expected to submit assignments through the Canvas Assignment Tool in electronic format. After the assignment is processed, as an instructor I receive a report from turnitin.com that states if and how another author’s work was used in the assignment. Student Learning Outcomes

  • Fraud, Ethics, and Internal Control - Gain an understanding of the need for a code of ethics and internal controls as well as the different types of potential fraud that the control environment must guard against.
  • Internal Controls and Risks in IT Systems - Gain an understanding of internal controls for IT systems including IT general and application controls.
  • IT Governance - Gain an understanding of IT governance, its role in strategic management, and the system development lifecycle.
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems  - Gain an understanding of enterprise resource management systems including implementation issues and the benefits and risks of these systems.
  • Auditing Information Technology-Based Processes  - Gain an understanding of auditing IT processes and the use of computers in auditing controls and substantive testing.
  • Emerging Technologies - Acquire hands on experience with an emerging or underutilized accounting technology. Gain an understanding of the benefits and limitations of using this technology in an accounting and auditing context.

Course Activities

  • Lecture Quizzes will be brief Webcourses quizzes covering the online material that should be completed prior to attending the face-to-face session on the related material.
  • Homework  assignments will be submitted through Webcourses, unless alternative submission instructions are provided, and will be due by 11:59PM on the due date listed on the attached course schedule and in Webcourses.
  • In-Class Activities will occur during face-to-face class period during the semester. Grades for these activities will be based on a combination of attendance and performance on the in-class assignment, which will be due in part or in full at the end of the class period. Make-up assignments will be available.
  • Group Project will be a research project completed throughout the second half of the semester with periodic deliverables.
  • Midterm  and Final Exams  will be administered through Webcourses. You can review your individual exam with the instructor during office hours or by appointment at any time throughout the semester. You can access your scores using the gradebook function of Webcourses.

Assessment and Grading Procedures

I will assess your performance in this course based on the following components:

Late work will receive a 10% penalty for each day it is late with a maximum penalty of 50%.

I will determine the final distribution of letter grades at the end of the semester. However, those letter grades will be no less generous than the following:

College of Business Incomplete Grade Policy

A grade of “I” (incomplete) may be assigned at the discretion of the instructor under the following conditions: 1) the course must be substantially complete and the student must be passing the class; 2) the student must be unable to complete the course due to extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control; and 3) the student must provide the appropriate documentation. The instructor will determine a reasonable amount of time for the student to complete the remaining course requirements. The incomplete grade agreement must have the approval of the instructor’s department chair.
