- UNIVERSITY COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course is about the evolution of modern-day exhibitions and trade shows from fairs and festivals.
- COURSE OBJECTIVES: After this course, the student will be able to:
- Become familiar with a number of fairs and festivals around the world
- Understand religious, cultural, economic issues of fairs and festivals
- Discuss the impacts of fairs and festivals on communities
- Explain the primary fair/festival stakeholders and their roles
- Identify critical fair/festival essential services and tangible products
- Compare/contrast inheritance of fairs and festivals
- Discuss how fairs & festivals can be ‘windows to our world’.
- COURSE PREREQUISITES: HFT 1000, HFT 2750, or Consent of Instructor.
- RECOMMENDED TEXT: Festival and Special Event Management, Varied Authors, Wiley Australia Tourism Series, 5th Edition; ISBN 978-1742164618
- Electronic reading will also be assigned during the semester.
- EVALUATION AND GRADING: This course is based on a point system as explained below. All tests and assignments have designated point values. The total number of points students can earn in this course is 670. Your final letter grade will be based on your total points and what percentage they represent. Your final grade will be determined by how well you fulfill course requirements. Your grade will be based on:
- Mini Quizzes (150): You will have 15 online mini-quizzes (5-question), each worth 10 points. Questions may come from PowerPoints, videos, and any additional information uploaded to course modules. Questions will be multiple-choice and true/false and will be worth 2 points each.
- Midterm and Final Exams (200 points): You will have a midterm and final exam, each worth 100 points. The material will cover PPs, videos, additional readings, or any other materials used during the course. The format will be multiple-choice and true/false. Each test will have 50 questions worth 2 points each. The Final Exam will NOT be cumulative.
- Discussions (220): You will have 15 opportunities to comment on a discussion topic, all worth 15 points, except discussion 1, which worth 10 points. For you to receive the full points, you MUST respond to at least THREE of your peers’ discussion postings. These discussion topics are organized into each module and are relevant to the topics discussed in those weeks
- Term Paper (100): You will submit a term paper relating to a major trend in global event management.

- COURSE SCHEDULE: The course is available via this Schedule link; however, adjustments may be made at the discretion of the instructor based on the progress of the class.
- POLICIES:
- Academic Honesty: Cases of academic impropriety of any type (e.g., plagiarism, cheating) will be dealt with in accordance with the Rules of Conduct and the Disciplinary Process of the University of Central Florida, as described in the latest edition of The Golden Rule. Cheating/ plagiarism of any kind will result at the very least in an “F” for that assignment and may (depending on the severity of the case) lead to an “F” for the entire course, suspension, or expulsion from UCF and/or a “Z” designation on the student’s official transcript indicating academic dishonesty. - The Golden Rule: Students are encouraged to obtain and read the University’s publication (http://goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu/docs/goldenrule.pdf). It is assumed by the instructor that the student is familiar with this document, which serves as the guide to the administrative aspects of the course.

Under most circumstances, your records will not be released without your written and signed consent, however, some directory information may be released to third parties without your prior consent unless a written request to restrict this is on file. Unsigned or unclear emails will not receive replies.
- Professionalism: Regular participation, being prepared for class (having completed readings, quizzes, online discussions prior to class deadlines), courtesy to the instructor and fellow students, and avoiding disruptive behaviors are all expected in the classroom and on Webcourse—just as they are in the professional arena of the workplace students are preparing to enter.
- Attendance Reporting: As of Fall 2014, UCF faculty are required to document students’ academic activity at the beginning of each course. In order to document that you began this course, please complete the ATTENDANCE REPORTING QUIZ on Webcourse by the end of the first week of classes or as soon as possible after you add the course. Failure to do so may result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid.
