Course Materials and Resources

Required Materials/Resources

  • No required textbook; all readings available via WebCourse Modules
  • In lieu of a textbook, we will watch Crash Course Theater and Drama videos
  • Internet access, browser, Zoom access, a PDF reader, and e-mail required.
  • Webcams and microphones will be required for class meetings and may be required for exams.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Acquire vocabulary to discuss modern performance and theatre;
  • Identify and make critical connections between key artists, performance practices, and literary genres of the major periods of modern theatre history;
  • Contextualize modern and contemporary theatre productions and literature within their economic, political, and cultural moments;
  • Learn to problematize inherited historical narratives;
  • Procure, read, and analyze challenging academic articles;
  • Make a case for the continued production/consumption of modern plays, immersive performance, and classical musicals.

Course Activities

If you stay on top of your assignments and do the required readings, you will pass this class! Every week, plan on allotting time to watch 5-20 minutes of video material and read at least one play plus one other reading (article, theory text) per week. You will need regular Internet access and the ability to connect to our weekly Zoom meetings.

Graded course activities include:

Extra Credit

If you would like to do extra credit this semester, please read a play by a contemporary BIPOC playwright and write a two page (double-spaced) paper on how that play resonates with any of the other plays, themes, or scholarship we've covered this semester. This essay is due on the same day as your final Dramaturgy Note. Each student may write one. This extra credit paper is worth 2 points on your final grade. OR, if you connect your play by a Black playwright to the content of the module for which you missed a Zoom meeting, this paper will expunge that one unexcused absence.

Gordon Rule

This course is a Gordon Rule course. The assignments which fulfill the Gordon Rule have the following characteristics: 1.) The writing will have a clearly defined central idea or thesis; 2.) It will provide adequate support for that idea; 3.) It will be organized clearly and logically; 4.) It will show awareness of the conventions of standard written English; 5.) It will be formatted or presented in an appropriate way.

Activity Submissions

All assignments, exams and presentations will be submitted via Webcourses@UCF submission.

  • Please double space all written work.
  • Please use the Chicago Manual of Style for citations
  • I will only accept text attachments in Word Doc or PDF form.

Attendance/Participation

REVISED PARTICIPATION CRITERIA:

Everyone should aim to participate at least 5x this semester during the Zooms. This means using the hand raise function to make a comment, asking questions about readings and other academic content, and using the chat function to contribute to the ongoing discussion.

If you do not feel comfortable talking in our synchronous classes, schedule an office hours appointment with me, or send me an email with your thoughts about the class or readings. That counts as participation too.

Another portion of your participation grade is to view and comment on at least 5 different Partner Presentations within a week of their posting. You can view those here. Be sure to check back every week to view and comment on new uploads.

REVISED ATTENDANCE POLICIES:

Each Wednesday we will meet via Zoom for synchronous lecture/discussions. Your attendance at these sessions is a required component of this course.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:

You are allowed 1 freebie (unexcused) absence from our Weekly zoom meetings. I do not need to know when or why you will be taking your freebie absence.

Two (2) or more unexcused absences from Zoom sessions will result in an automatic zero for your "Attendance" portion of your "Attendance and Participation" grade. If you find yourself with 2 absences, consider doing an extra credit paper, see above.

EXCUSED ABSENCES:

Since we are meeting online and only once per week, I will excuse absences solely in extenuating circumstances, such as serious illness (with a doctor's note), university sponsored absences (please provide the requisite university-sponsored absence forms), military obligations, and religious holidays. Please also see the Policy Statement on COVID-19 at the end of this syllabus. If any of these extenuating circumstances apply to you, please submit your excused absence and any documentation to this Google Form (in advance of your absence, if possible). Please do not email me or the TAs about it; we will simply redirect you to that form.

INTERNET OUTAGE POLICY

"My Internet failed during or before class and I couldn't attend some or all of the class meeting!" Ugh, y'all, I get it. This has happened to me! The Zoom struggle is real.

While I can't completely "excuse" or expunge absences for Internet snafus, I can give you an opportunity to make up these kinds of absences. If you miss a class due to Internet problems, you may attend, instead,

1. any of the UCF readings (that you are NOT involved in) or

2. any of the UCF Dramaturgy Talks this semester

And then write me a two-page (double-spaced) reflection on how that event connected with any aspect of this theatre history class. Then, I will expunge the tech outage absence and you'll be in the clear! Submit that reflection here.

Make-up Exams and Assignments

Per university policy, you are allowed to submit make-up work (or an equivalent, alternate assignment) for authorized university-sponsored activities, religious observances, or legal obligations (such as jury duty). If this participation conflicts with your course assignments, I will offer a reasonable opportunity for you to complete missed assignments and/or exams. The make-up assignment and grading scale will be equivalent to the missed assignment and its grading scale. In the case of an authorized university activity, it is your responsibility to show me a signed copy of the Program Verification Form for which you will be absent, prior to the class in which the absence occurs. In any of these cases, please contact me at least two weeks ahead of time to notify me of upcoming needs.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with Zoom by visiting the UCF Zoom Guides at <https://cdl.ucf.edu/support/webcourses/zoom/>. You may choose to use Zoom on your mobile device (phone or tablet).

Things to Know About Zoom:

  • You must sign in to my Zoom session using your UCF NID and password.
  • Improper classroom behavior is not tolerated within Zoom sessions and may result in a referral to the Office of Student Conduct.

University-Wide Face Covering Policy for Common Spaces and Face-to-Face Classes

To protect members of our community, everyone is required to wear a facial covering inside all common spaces including classrooms (https://policies.ucf.edu/documents/PolicyEmergencyCOVIDReturnPolicy.pdf). Students who choose not to wear facial coverings will be asked to leave the classroom by the instructor. If they refuse to leave the classroom or put on a facial covering, they may be considered disruptive (please see the Golden Rule for student behavior expectations). Faculty have the right to cancel class if the safety and well-being of class members are in jeopardy. Students will be responsible for the material that would have been covered in class as provided by the instructor.

Notifications in Case of Changes to Course Modality

Depending on the course of the pandemic during the semester, the university may make changes to the way classes are offered. If that happens, please look for announcements or messages in Webcourses@UCF or Knights email about changes specific to this course.

COVID-19 and Illness Notification

Students who believe they may have a COVID-19 diagnosis should contact UCF Student Health Services (407-823-2509) so proper contact tracing procedures can take place.

Students should not come to campus if they are ill, are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID, or if anyone living in their residence has tested positive or is sick with COVID-19 symptoms. CDC guidance for COVID-19 symptoms is located here: (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html (Links to an external site.))

Students should contact their instructor(s) as soon as possible if they miss class for any illness reason to discuss reasonable adjustments that might need to be made. When possible, students should contact their instructor(s) before missing class.

In Case of Faculty Illness

If the instructor falls ill during the semester, there may be changes to this course, including having a backup instructor take over the course. Please look for announcements or mail in Webcourses@UCF or Knights email for any alterations to this course.

Course Accessibility and Disability COVID-19 Supplemental Statement

Accommodations may need to be added or adjusted should this course shift from an on-campus to a remote format. Students with disabilities should speak with their instructor and should contact sas@ucf.edu to discuss specific accommodations for this or other courses.
