Assignments
Reading: You should read the assigned topics before class or (live-lectures after March 18, 2020) in which they will be discussed. This will make the lecture (or live-lecture) more understandable, help you solve the pre-assignment and will prepare you to ask questions.
Pre-Assignments: You will be assigned a pre-assignment on a weekly basis using LearnSmart (LS) on Connect and automatically graded. You will be provided with lecture notes and after reading the topic you should be able to solve the pre-assignment. The pre-assignment includes also solving the Video HW questions.
Written: Online homework from the textbook will be given on a biweekly basis on Connect and automatically graded.
TOPICS: (See calendar for dates)
- Basic Concepts, Work and Heat, Chapter 1, 2
- Properties of Pure Substances, Chapter 3
- First Law for Closed Systems, Chapter 4
- First Law for Open Systems, Chapter 5
- Second Law, Chapter 6
- Entropy, Chapter 7
- Gas Power Cycles, Chapter 9
- Vapor Power Cycles, Chapter 10
- Refrigeration Cycles, Chapter 11
Missed Assignments/Make-Ups/Extra Credit
Please note that
- All tests and exams will be closed book. A formula sheet will be provided. No crib sheet allowed. For tests and exam schedule see Course Schedule.
- Late work will not be accepted. The solutions to the assignments will be posted an hour after the due date. The feedback provided will help you learn as soon as you can go back and learn from your mistakes and prepares you better for the tests. However, the best 5 homework out of 6 regular assignments (A12-A1011) will be considered in the final grade, also the best 9 video Hw and the best 9 LS will be considered . This takes into account bad circumstances that you may encounter.
- No make-up Tests will be given. There will be no make up test/exam. In compensation, the best 2 out of the 3 assessments will count for the final grade. This takes into account bad circumstances that you may encounter. In the case the student misses a test intentionally and then encounters an unpleasant circumstance, no extra consideration will be provided since he/she is given enough opportunity to do well in the course.
- Note that T1 will be held in class while T2 and T3 will be held on a computer, remotely. Students are expected to have a computer equipped with a webcam and is capable or downloading LockDown Browser + Respondus Monitor + ProctorHub+ Honorlock and have them all function properly.
Course Schedule:
The classes or live-lectures will be used to briefly talk about theory. Most of the time will be used for questions/answers and problem solving. Students are expected to have read the material, watched the videos and done the pre-assignments and videos HW Before coming to class. The course schedule is shown in Course Schedule. This schedule is subject to change, any modifications will be announced in Webcourses as well as in class or during live lectures after March 18, 2020.
Evaluation and Grading
Tests and Final Examination:
There will be three tests including the final examination (refer to Course Schedule for dates). You may bring to the exams a calculator (no laptop computers nor cell phones). All tests, as well as the Final Examination will be held in class (refer to Course Schedule for dates). No crib sheet allowed.
All tests and the final examination will be closed book. No crib sheet allowed. No partial credit will be given to MCQ questions T/F or any concept questions nor short problem solving, if any. However, you will be given partial credit in long problems.
The course grade will be determined numerically as follows:
Pre-assignment (Connect) 5% LearnSmart (LS)
Assignments (Connect) 10%
Video Homework 10%
Tests 1 and 2 37.5% Each
Final Examination (Optional) 37.5% - Final Exam
Total 100%
You may take the final if you would like to improve your grade, since the best 2 out of 3 tests will be considered in your final grade. The lowest mark in your worst test will simply be ignored. In other words, if a student chooses to take the final examination when she/he had done the two tests, then the better two marks of the three assessments (final exam included in here) will count equally for the final grade. No conditions apply regarding this matter. The letter grade will be assigned according to the following scale:
Letter Grade |
Points |
---|---|
A |
>90 |
B |
80 – 89 |
C |
70 – 79 |
D |
60 – 69 |
F |
<60 |
Attendance Policy
- Class attendance is expected and highly encouraged during all lectures or live-lectures. No marks deducted or lost for not attending, though.
CELL PHONE POLICY:
The Texting or other use of cell or smart phones is prohibited at ALL TIMES in class. Cell phones must be turned off during class. Any student with an electronic device on the desk (other than a standard calculator) operational during an in-class exam or quiz will automatically receive a zero.
Facebook Policy
Students are highly encouraged to use the Discussion group in http://webcourses.ucf.edu. Using Groupme, Facebook or others may get you an 'F' in the course, for any mischievous activities. If you find any, please report it immediately, specifically during serious tests and exams.
Academic Honesty
Plagiarism and cheating of any kind on an examination, quiz, or assignment will result at least in an "F" for that assignment (and may, depending on the severity of the case, lead to an "F" for the entire course) and may be subject to appropriate referral to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. See the UCF Golden Rule for further information. I will assume for this course that you will adhere to the academic creed of this University and will maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. In other words, don't cheat by giving answers to others or taking them from anyone else. I will also adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity, so please do not ask me to change (or expect me to change) your grade illegitimately or to bend or break rules for one person that will not apply to everyone.
Academic Integrity
Students should familiarize themselves with UCF’s Rules of Conduct. According to Section 1, “Academic Misconduct,” students are prohibited from engaging in
- Unauthorized assistance: Using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information or study aids in any academic exercise unless specifically authorized by the instructor of record. The unauthorized possession of examination or course-related material also constitutes cheating.
- Communication to another through written, visual, electronic, or oral means: The presentation of material which has not been studied or learned, but rather was obtained through someone else’s efforts and used as part of an examination, course assignment, or project.
- Commercial Use of Academic Material: Selling of course material to another person, student, and/or uploading course material to a third-party vendor without authorization or without the express written permission of the university and the instructor. Course materials include but are not limited to class notes, Instructor’s PowerPoints, course syllabi, tests, quizzes, labs, instruction sheets, homework, study guides, handouts, etc.
- Falsifying or misrepresenting the student’s own academic work.
- Plagiarism: Using or appropriating another’s work without any indication of the source, thereby attempting to convey the impression that such work is the student’s own.
- Multiple Submissions: Submitting the same academic work for credit more than once without the express written permission of the instructor.
- Helping another violate academic behavior standards.
For more information about Academic Integrity, students may consult The Center for Academic Integrity http://www.academicintegrity.org/icai/assets/FVProject.pdf.
For more information about plagiarism and misuse of sources, see “Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism: The WPA Statement on Best Practices.”
Students should also familiarize themselves with the procedures for academic misconduct in UCF’s student handbook, The Golden Rule
http://goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu/docs/goldenrule.pdf. UCF faculty members have a responsibility for students’ education and the value of a UCF degree, and so seek to prevent unethical behavior and when necessary respond to academic misconduct. Penalties can include a failing grade in an assignment or in the course, suspension or expulsion from the university, and/or a “Z Designation” on a student’s official transcript indicating academic dishonesty, where the final grade for this course will be preceded by the letter Z. For more information about the Z Designation, see http://goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu/zgrade.
