Due 11:59pm Sunday, April 29
There are three parts to this ‘take home’ final exam. For each part, you have a choice of which to answer. Extra answers will not be graded.
You may submit your answer in three ways:
- By Webcourses message as an attachment;
- By email to larson@ucf.edu as an attachment;
- Upload the file to the ‘final exam’ assignment in webcourses.
You can put all three parts into a single file, or separately; both are fine.
Part I: Short ID – 25 points
Choose five of the following an identity in a paragraph. Include the who, what, when, where, and why, as appropriate and be sure to indicate the significance to the history of South Asia.

Part II: Essay on Readings – 50 points
Choose one of the following topics and write a clear, organized essay, 3-4 double-spaced pages in length. Provide specific examples and quotations as appropriate to support your argument. There should be at least two quotations, with analysis/explanation. For each choice, there is a brief associated reading necessary to answer the question.
Option A: Success of British Colonialism?
In pp. 76-87 in Modern South Asia, what do Bose and Jalal see as the main avenues of British colonialism in India, and to what extent did they change South Asian society?
Cite using footnotes: Bose and Jalal, Modern South Asia (Routledge, 2011) page(s) AA-BB.
Option B: Tagore and the Bengal Renaissance
Read Chapter One, Bimala’s Story (sections I-III): http://www.ibiblio.org/eldritch/rt/hw.htm Links to an external site.. How does this excerpt from Rabindranath Tagore’s work (reveal or epitomize the Bengali Renaissance? Possible approaches include analyzing the mentality, or the themes, or the relation of tradition to modern.
You can use more of the story if you want. This reading is rather awkward to cite, so use a parenthetical (I), or (II), or (III) at the end of the sentence to reference the section.
Option C: “Quit India”
Following Sir Stafford Cripps’ failed mission to India, Gandhi and the Indian National Congress would launch the “Quit India” movement. Using the at least two of the texts below, analyze and discuss the reaction to Cripps’ failed mission and the response by Gandhi. The texts are listed in chronological order – note that Roosevelt’s telegram was sent before the formal Quit India resolution.

Part III: Historical Essay – 25 points
Write a short essay (2-3 pages, double-space typed) taking a position on one of the following questions:
D. To what extent was the British Raj similar to earlier South Asian Empires?
E. One of Gandhi’s famous quotations is “In reality there are as many religions as there are individuals.” How does this reflect the religious history of South Asia?
F. Did the Mughal Empire create (or begin the creation of) a unified Indian/South Asian identity?
