Module 2 Options for Discussion Question #1
Chapter 2 deals with a little of the history of nursing and the contemporary image of the profession. The following discussion topics relate to this chapter.
Pick one of the topics below for your discussion posting.
Media portrayal
In the popular media, nurses are portrayed in a very wide variety of roles and levels of sophistication. Search your memory, your television dial and your video collection to recall some characters that might contribute to the public impression of nursing. (Choose either option A or B for your original posting.)
A. Name and discuss two characters from the popular media that portray a positive impression of nursing.
B. Name and discuss two characters from the popular media that portray a negative impression of nursing.
Trustworthy Image
Recent studies have indicated that nurses are the most highly trusted health professional group. What component of nursing's contemporary image places nurses in this position of trust? What threatens this position?
Dress
First impressions tend to be lasting impressions. What is your opinion about the impression nurses make by the way they dress? Do you believe that a cartoon festooned scrub top with hot pink Crocs to contrast the neon green scrub pants provides a professional appearance? Do you believe that all nurses should resemble Nurse Ratched? Is there middle ground to this age old argument?
Health Reform
You are a trauma nurse who takes care of a U.S. Senator after a life-threatening car accident. He credits you with saving his life. When he becomes president, he invites you to the White House and asks you to tell him the most important thing he can do to reform the health care system. Briefly, what would you say? Don't forget to use an article, website, or textbook to support your posting.
Impact of Media on Perspective of Nurses
As most of you are probably aware there was a huge controversy recently involving Miss Colorado and her talent in the Miss America pageant. Miss Colorado presented an original monologue about being a nurse.
The hosts of The View asked why she was wearing a doctor's stethoscope.
After the hosts of the The View discussed this monologue the controversy began.
The View then responded with an explanation of what they had meant
There was much outcry from the nursing population. There were even sponsors who pulled or suspended their advertising of The View

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the comments made by the hosts were offensive to nursing? Was the public outcry justified?
Were the sponsors justified in removing their advertising?
