Chapter 13 introductory remarks
Chapter 13 introductory remarks
It has been said that the aim of psychological research is to describe, predict, and influence behavior. The descriptive research strategies detailed in chapter 13 are designed to do the former – describe specific variables as they occur in individuals, populations, or situations. Three strategies are detailed in chapter 13 including (1) observational research designs where the investigator observes and carefully records behavior, (2)survey research where the investigator asks participants to describe their own behavior, characteristics, beliefs, or attitudes, and (3) case studies which involve an in depth observation and description of the behavior of a single individual or a small group of individuals such as a family, a pack of animals, employees of a small business. The strengths and limitations of each of the designs are discussed.
