Active Learning Active learning is based on the premise that students learn best when they are actively engaged and can contribute to the process and define their learning experience,
Alignment The degree to which components of a course (i.e., course objectives, module objectives & assessments) work together to achieve desired course objectives.
Assessment Activities that provide acceptable evidence that instructors can use to ensure that students have achieved targeted course objectives.
Asynchronous Asynchronous is when two or more people interact, but it is not happening simultaneously.
Attribute At UCF, in addition to course modalities, there are also "course attributes." Course attributes describe how a course is delivered and how students will be expected to participate. 
Backwards Design A way to visualize a course starting with a set of desired results, then developing assessments to assess the achievement of those results, and then finally identifying learning activities and instructional materials to help support the achievement of those original desired results.
Blended learning A “pedagogical approach that combines the effectiveness and socialization opportunities of the classroom with the technologically enhanced active learning possibilities of the online environment." (Dzubian, Hartman & Moskal, 2004) 
Course Evaluation Course evaluation as it relates to digital learning refers to the systemic examination of course materials, activities, assessments, or students to make improvements or inform decisions (Patton, 1987).
Course Map A visual representation of all the components of a course.
Course Sequence The order in which course objectives, materials, activities, and assessments are presented to students and completed by students. 
Instructional Material Instructional materials refer to the learning materials and resources used to provide instruction to students to support them in achieving the stated course learning objectives. 
Institutional Review Board The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an independent committee that protects the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in activities conducted under the auspices of its affiliated institution.

Learning Activity Events and opportunities that support student learning and achievement of targeted course objectives. 
Learning Objective (Course) A statement that specifies an observable, measurable, and achievable outcome that defines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes learners will demonstrate by the end of a course.
Learning Objective (Module) A statement that specifies an observable, measurable, and achievable outcome that defines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes learners will demonstrate by the end of a unit of learning or module.
Modality The instructional mode in which a course will be delivered. 
Module A unit of learning/instruction used to organize course learning objectives, learning activities, and instructional material.
Student Orientation Module A student orientation or Getting Started module important information to help students start a course off successfully. This documentation can include the syllabus, instructor introduction, course overview, course expectations, and the course schedule.
Synchronous Synchronous refers to when two or more people interact at the same time.
