Transcripts

What is a Transcript?

A transcript is a document that contains the text version of speech and non-speech content in video/audio content. Transcripts should be hosted in the same area as the original video and not in a separate location. For example, if a video in Webcourses is on a page, the transcript should be placed within the same page.

When are Transcripts Required?

This table details the requirements for transcripts based upon WCAG 2.0 AA, which is UCF’s identified accessibility standard.
Content Type Transcript Required?
Pre-recorded audio-only Yes
Live audio-only Yes
Pre-recorded video (no audio) No (no audio information)
Live video (no audio) No (no audio information)
Pre-recorded video (with audio) No
Live video (with audio) No

In short, transcripts are required for any audio-only content. Due to the fact that captioning is required for all prerecorded or live video content, transcripts are not required, but can be included as an additional accessibility option for users.

Best Practices

  • Speakers are identified
    • If speaker names are unknown, speakers should be given a number that is consistent throughout the video (e.g., Speaker 1, Speaker 2, etc.)
  • Transcript should be separated into sections with headings (when applicable)
  • Include timestamps for longer videos
  • Transcripts must be in an accessible document format

Examples

For each example, you will find a video, as well as a transcript linked below the video. Each transcript must be downloaded to view it.

This example is correct because of the formatting of the transcript. After opening the document, you may notice that there is a heading, speakers are labeled, headings are applied, and timestamps are present.
