Now you’ll be reviewing the Routledge Encyclopedia of Film Theory for the first time! You’ll be reading "Apparatus Theory" a theoretical essay from pages 21-33. This essay is about cinema’s relationship to Plato’s allegory of the cave.

Since this is our first theoretical essay that you will be reading in this class, I wanted to provide you with some suggestions that I observe while reading dense theory.

Do ThisTips for reading film theory

  • Print out the reading or digitally underline key phrases or points in the reading.
  • Take frequent notes with page citations to retain information.
  • After each paragraph, write a one sentence note of what you think the main idea is. It could be a paraphrased summary or a direct phrase from the text.
  • Continue this practice as you read.

These tips help me comprehend film theory, but they are only here as an option if you experience difficulties! You can download the text using the above link or through the library at: https://go.openathens.net/redirector/ucf.edu?url=https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781136472633
