Contemporary Technophobia

As stated in the Filmish chapter, the influence of technophobia can be seen in b-movies, science fiction and horror films. These films show the consequences of harnessing the power of technology. 

 

 

Contemporaneously, the British Netflix show Black Mirror is in direct conversation with technophobic ideas. The show is an anthology series where each episode explores a new narrative with a new cast and directing team. The narratives imagine a future where technology is incorporated into daily life. Each episode serves as a cautionary tale for how we engage or will engage with technology in the future. 

However, episodes of the show, including San Junipero and Hang the DJ  explore the positive influences that technology can bring to the world. In technophobic films, the hybrid of humanity and technology is seen as evil. However, there are countless real world examples of technologies that have a positive impact on the world, such as being more connected with distant loved ones or break throughs in artificial limbs. 

 

   

 

As filmmakers, the evolving nature of technology allows us to imagine new possibilities. CGI and state-of-the-art equipment transport us to far-away worlds. For relatively cheap, films made on a D.I.Y. basis have never looked better.
