Module 10: Start Here
Welcome to Module Ten: Power and Ideology & Video Essay Criticism!
You will begin the module by reading the final two chapters of Filmish to review this week’s module content on “Power and Ideology” and “Technology and Technophobia.” Then have your choice of feature-length film screening and a short assignment related to diverse perspectives in film criticism. You'll explore the form of video essay criticism through a short instructional video essay from the Every Frame a Painting series and by discovering “The Video Essay Podcast.” To conclude this module you'll be submitting a final project proposal.
Module 10: Topics and Goals
In this module you can expect to:
- Understand the ideological function of cinema through reading Filmish Chapters Six and Seven and screening Meek's Cutoff or I am Not Your Negro.
- Explore how these ideas relate to the field of film criticism by listening to a podcast episode and completing a discussion on Diversity in Film Criticism.
- Learn more about how to compose a video essay by watching Every Frame A Painting's "F for Fake-How to structure a video essay" and exploring "The Video Essay Podcast". The Video Essay podcast is an optional resource to help those of you considering this format for your final project.
- Lastly, you'll submit the next step in working towards the final project, your Final Project Proposal
