Research Methods for Film Analysis

Your final project is required to have at least two scholarly sources. That means two peer-reviewed sources that are outside readings from this class. Here is some additional information on what peer-reviewed means: https://www.angelo.edu/library/handouts/peerrev.php Links to an external site.

On the next page, take this survey to see if you can choose the peer-reviewed sources about Julie Dash's amazing film, Daughters of the Dust. Links to an external site.

Now, I'll provide you with some examples of where you can find scholarly sources from the library and elsewhere.

UCF Library

The first method to finding scholarly sources, and one that I myself use constantly, is to use the UCF library. The library has an impressive catalog of scholarly sources that you can use to aid in the completion of your final project.

There are also robust databases specific to the study of film. I recommend navigating through this "research guide" that presents recommended databases for film and using the Communication & Mass Media Complete (EBSCOhost) and Film and Television Literature Index (EBSCOhost) databases. In these databases, you can complete advanced searches that narrow your search field to just specific films and concepts. You can even check a box that finds only scholarly sources. Be prepared that the initial search may not yield results, but I encourage you to keep experimenting with search terms. Through EBSCOhost, you can even copy and paste MLA citations directly into your proposal or final project!

Now, watch this short video from the UCF library on how to search through a subject database. If you experience trouble using the subject database, you can find sources through the "quicksearch" option. However, remember that quicksearch considers the entire library database, which may produce results that are frequently off-topic. You can find more information for how to use quicksearch to find peer-reviewed sources here Links to an external site.

Other Scholarly Sources

Senses of cinema Links to an external site. is an Australian-based contemporary journal of online film criticism that features contemporary criticism on historic and recent works. Senses of cinema is "devoted to the serious and eclectic discussion of cinema. We believe cinema is an art that can take many forms, from the industrially-produced blockbuster to the hand-crafted experimental work; we also aim to encourage awareness of the histories of such diverse forms." You can find wonderful criticism on contemporary works through this journal. You can also find scholarly sources  on Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media Links to an external site. and through the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies Links to an external site.. All articles on sites such as these are considered scholarly sources.
