Review: Final Project Instructions

Now, for the rest of the semester, we will be shifting focus towards the final project that you will be completing for this course.

This is a multi-step assignment that features many parts (including a proposal, work-in-progress presentation, rough draft and final submission). It's important to review the instructions for the assignment carefully and stay informed on project due dates/benchmarks. Module content over the next few weeks will aid in the development of your final project.

For the culminating assignment in this course, you will create a short essay film, short graphic novel, OR short series of critical essays in which you apply ideas and concepts explored this semester, modeled on the materials studied in class.

If you want to make a video essay, make sure you have a knowledge of editing techniques and access to software. If not, consider completing a graphic novel or series of essays.

You may choose to work individually or in pairs. Take the next few weeks to consider if you would like to work on this project yourself or with someone else. You will have to make your decision by the time the final project proposal is due. Keep in mind that if you work in pairs, there is more work involved.

You can choose any two films to analyze for this final project and two unique concepts that we have gone over in the course.  For a list of potential concepts, review the final project assignment.

A Note for Video Essays:

The use of film clips for the final project is protected under fair use. Filming original work is optional, but it needs to be paired with film clips. Quality of original camera work and sound design will not be graded, since you don’t have access to high-end production equipment. However, I will be focusing on the quality of your overall analysis, development of your argument and use of supporting materials when grading submissions.

For more detailed directions for the final project, review the instructions in the assignment folder, which also includes an assignment rubric.

On the next page, you will review the assignments that make up the final project.
