Module 3: Start Here
Welcome to Module 3: Apparatus Theory and Plato's Allegory of the Cave!
You will read “Apparatus Theory,” which is your first theoretical reading of the course. Module content will break down and demystify Plato’s Allegory of the Cave through an understanding of the concept’s application throughout film history. You will demonstrate an understanding of this theory through a short quiz and discussion assignment. This will mark a transition from analyzing the frame to analyzing space, which is what we’ll be doing in the next few weeks.
Module 3: Topics and Goals
In this module you can expect to:
- Learn about Plato's Allegory of the Cave and its relationship to cinema.
- Read from the Routledge Encyclopedia of Film Theory Links to an external site., "Apparatus Theory" (Plato) (P. 21-33)
- Practice your knowledge of this topic by doing an optional study game.
- Apply Plato’s allegory of the Cave to better analyze theoretical elements and cinematic expression in two screenings: a short, experimental film, L'Arrive (1999) Links to an external site. and a feature film of your choice: The Truman Show (1996) or The Conformist Links to an external site.(1970)
- Participate in Discuss: Truman Show or the Conformist, where you will discuss the film you chose and compare your analysis with others.
- Take your first quiz, Quiz #1, which covers topics from Modules 1-3.
