For our screening this week, you'll watch the 2013 film Her directed by Spike Jonze. For those who haven't seen it, the film follows a man falling in love with an operating system.
The film is made striking by its deliberate staging and manipulation of the mise-en-scene to create a unique, but simplistic, diegesis of a near-future world. We will be using this film to discover how filmmakers can create a film's diegesis through cinematic techniques.
Still from Her featuring the film's unique application of mise-en-scene techniques. From the New York Times Links to an external site.
While Watching....
- Consider the films use of mis-en-scene. What elements deliberately staged in the frame help create the film's diegesis?
- How do cinematic techniques like camera technique, framing, use of color, off-screen space, editing etc. affect the film's mise-en-scene?
- Consider the film terms that you just reviewed on the Yale film analysis guide. How are the terms you discovered applied in the film?
