Welcome to Module Two: Film Analysis Terms!
This week, you'll refresh your knowledge of film terminology, which is important for accurately describing aspects of a film. Terms such as off-screen space, mise-en-scene and diegesis will be discussed at length. You will apply mis-en-scene details to a screening of the 2013 film Her. Then, you will analyze a scene from Sherlock Jr. incorporating the terms used in the module to create a short and thought-provoking original analysis.
Module 2: Topics and Goals
In this module you can expect to:
- Explore the Yale Film Analysis Guide Links to an external site., where you will learn new terms and/or refreshing your film vocabulary.
- Watch the 2013 Spike Jonze film Her (126 minutes) and complete the Her Analysis and the Yale Film Guide. This activity is a low-stakes way to put terms from the Yale Film Analysis Guide into practice.
- Return to Sherlock Jr., watching a short scene and incorporating terms used in the module to create a short and thought-provoking analysis in the Sherlock, Jr. Scene Analysis.
Assignments
By progressing through this module, you will complete these assignments:
- Participate in Discuss: Her using Yale Film Analysis Guide Terms which will contain two parts (initial post and comments).
- Complete: Sherlock Jr. Scene Analysis which will be your first analysis of a short scene in this course.
