Read ThisTextbooks

We will be using two textbooks in this course. One is a graphic novel called Filmish and the other is  The Routledge Encyclopedia of Film Theory.

Filmish is a graphic novel with a lot of wonderful visual information that will help ground theoretical concepts through imagery of films from cinematic history. You can purchase the book or a Kindle version here:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/1910593036/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_83DET4AEPYPF2M2QEVZ3 Links to an external site.

I will also be making a PDF of the first chapter accessible in the first module!

Our second textbook is The Routledge Encyclopedia of Film Theory. It's a great introduction and breakdown of complex film theories and how they can be read in the context of a film. The best part is that it's offered for free through the UCF library! Use the link below to access this textbook through OpenAthens:

Other Course Materials

We will also be reading a scholarly article that I will be providing in PDF format. I will also ask you on occasion to watch 5-10 minute video essays from Tony Zhou’s Every Frame a Painting. This is a critically acclaimed video essay series on youtube that analyzes key films and filmmakers. By assigning this, I’m hoping that you use them as a template for your potential final project.

Finally, I may be linking other forms of media such as online articles and podcasts for you to review for completion of a week's module.
