Assignment DUE 2/17: In this assignment, you will choose one of your 3 people and write a cover letter to them (note: you don't have to send it to them) using the information you gleaned from the Provocations page. It is expected that you will do research on the person, their company and their role before completing this assignment. You will assume that you are reaching out to engage them for an informational interview. This may be slightly different than a cover letter for a job posting. You will not be asking for a job interview, but rather an opportunity to engage with the professional to learn more about what they do.
Informational Interview
An informational interview is a discussion between a job seeker and an employed professional, in which the former seeks to learn as much as possible regarding the latter’s career, industry and/or company culture. It is not a job interview—it is closer to an informal conversation.
THE PROFESSIONAL CONTACT
Research and find professional in your field of interest to interview.
Things to think about:
- Field of interest
- What businesses are successful in the industry
- Who in the company will be the most effective to talk with?
- Is there anyone in your current network who could introduce you or will it be a blind reach out
How to start:
- Google and find a list of people you would be interested in reaching out to
The format for submitting the cover letter can be whatever you want. It is generally assumed that you will upload a document or send an email, but it doesn't matter how you provide this to me for the assignment.
Use the following naming convention for your submission: YourName.CoverLetter.Person'sName.WhereTheyWork
Due: 2/17
Grading:
You will be graded on how well you researched the company and the person and how you confidently and humbly ask for an informational interview.
