The actor's costume isn't complete with just the pieces of clothing on their body. Their hair, makeup, hats, jewelry, and even shoes are designed and often must be either constructed or modified a certain way, depending on the desired look.

Check out the following videos detailing the design, materials, and techniques utilized in these kinds of areas.

Pay attention in particular to their conversation on how often an actor's real hair is used in professional shows. What they say about their use of wigs in the production of Hamilton is what is typical for most shows, especially at the Broadway level.

Important - while makeup designers are a typical part of the creative team and make design decisions about the makeup for each actor, they are traditionally under the direction of the costume designer.

The actors themselves are the ones responsible for applying that makeup according to the design for every performance. Not the wardrobe team, not the designers. Each actor is given a series of illustrations of their makeup look(s) for the show called face charts. These are like renderings but of just the face, showing each detail in the makeup that should be applied and where on the face it should be. These should be treated like putting on the costume itself and followed precisely for each performance. The collection of all face charts for the actor is called the makeup plot.

Actors are not responsible for applying things like prosthetics that require very precise application techniques and need to be hand painted once applied to the actor's face.
