Midterm Project Description

Work with your group to produce a 3-5 minute video on a tool, technique or material covered in modules 1-6. Since the majority of you are performance majors, please think creatively. The purpose of the project is to convey to the audience appropriate information about your subject in an entertaining fashion. Tape Measure: The Musical or Oedipus, A Scene Shop Tragedy would be appropriate titles.

While you are are encouraged to be entertaining, the main purpose of the project is to convey to the audience appropriate information about your subject. You should include:

  • An accurate description of the tool, technique or material.  Please do not just read a description from the textbook.  Do some research, and treat this project as if it were an approximately 5-page long research paper.
  • A demonstration of the the tool, technique or material.  If, for instance, your video is about the band saw, actually demonstrate the proper use of the saw on camera.
  • Discussion and/or demonstration of the appropriate Safety Precautions to be used with the tool, process or material.

While it is expected that not everyone in the group will have the same amount of "face time" on camera (usually someone needs to operate the camera and/or direct) EVERY MEMBER of the group MUST appear on camera at least once.

You will each be asked to evaluate the contributions of your fellow group members and this evaluation will be used as part of the grade for the project.  Everyone is expected to contribute appropriately to the project.  Do not expect to let one person write, direct, film and edit the video and have the rest of the the group just show up to appear on screen - you should all work together to develop a concept, write a script and contribute to the final product.

You WILL NOT be graded on your video production/editing capabilities. You may shoot your video on a group member’s cell phone camera, or you may arrange to borrow an HD digital camera from the department – it doesn’t matter which as you will be graded on the CONTENT of the video, not the video itself.

When you are done, upload your video to YouTube and attach a link to the video as the assignment submission. Please make sure that the video is not set to private (so that I can access it) and make sure to check to make sure your link actually works!

 

Video Technical Help:

If you run into technical problems, please try the “Midterm Video Help” discussion first since one of your classmates is more likely than me to know the latest info on your particular camera/phone/gadget. I will, of course, be happy to help where I can, but remember that the CONTENT of the video is the assignment – the video is just a record of the presentation, so don’t get hung up with fancy editing, etc. But if you know how, feel free to be as creative with the video as you wish. If no one in your group has a video camera (or phone with video capability) please see me to arrange to check out a camera from the department.  There are many free video editing programs available online as well as built into YouTube.
