Course Introduction
Overview
Welcome to Introduction to Technical Theatre!
Specifically geared for students focused in acting, musical theatre, dance, and other non-technical fields, this course explores the foundational skills, tools, materials, terminology, and techniques used in creating the technical and design elements of a theatrical production. The purpose is not for you to become the best at hanging lights or building flats. The goal is rather to help you understand how things work backstage and how to be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with your design and tech colleagues.
This course is being taught using the Canvas Learning Management System which is branded as "Webcourses@UCF."
Who I Am
Hello all! My name is Rob Siler and I will be your instructor this semester.
A quick little bit about me - I am a lighting and projections designer with over 100 design credits during the past 8 years. I have designed Off-Broadway and at regional theatres across the country, and was the Assistant Lighting Designer on two Broadway shows. During my career I have also worked on over 40 productions as a part of the stage lighting (electrics) crew as an electrician, followspot operator, console programmer, or the crew lead. Additionally I have done live sound mixing, stage management, scenic painting, scenery construction, a few mediocre props builds, and enough bad acting in my youth to know that being on-stage was not what I wanted.
It is my hope that no matter the major or career path you are on this course will help you understand and appreciate theatre design and technology.
