Module 6: Radiology and Imaging Services

Welcome to Radiology and Imaging Services!

A key component of a hospital information system is the Radiology Department. Much like the HIM department's management of medical records (electronic or paper-based), the Radiology Department must store, retain, and distribute patient films. Patient scheduling is often the first operation to be computerized in the Radiology Dept.. Also, picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) are being used to facilitate storage, retrieval, and allow immediate access to displays of images in an all digital format. Computer-based (digital) dictation now enables physicians to quickly access and hear the results of radiologist's reports for a patient by telephone. The radiologist's reports are later transcribed to produce a hard copy record. Voice recognition systems are often used in the Radiology Dept. for quick production of transcribed reports.
