Module 4: Medical and Surgical Services

Welcome to Medical and Surgical Services!

In Medical Services, physicians use non-invasive modalities (e.g.- drug therapy) in the prevention or treatment of disease or other conditions. In Surgical Services, surgeons use invasive modalities in the treatment of disease or other conditions. Surgical services include a full scope of general, vascular, gynecological, orthopedic, otolaryngology, plastic or reconstructive, ophthalmology, spine procedures as well as laparoscopic/minimally invasive procedures.

The surgery department is effectively managed with the aid of computerization. Surgery scheduling is critical and instrument and supply needs can be managed with automatic inventory control. Also, posting and log systems that monitor surgeon and staff activities help to improve performance in this area. Most hospitals group all the information pertaining to each surgical procedure into an operative set or section. The information in the operative set usually includes: a special consent for surgery; pre-anesthesia, anesthesia, and post-anesthesia report (or recovery room record); the operative report; and pathology report, if applicable.
