The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Links to an external site. is an association focused on the development and employment of college-educated individuals. They have identified eight competencies that form the foundation for workplace success of college graduates. These competencies also are applicable to readiness and competitiveness for admission to graduate and professional schools.

As you fulfill your roles and responsibilities as a UTA and complete the activities and assignments for this course, it is anticipated that you will have advanced your competence in at least the following five areas. (There are eight NACE competencies, but we are focusing on five of those eight.)

  • Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
  • Communication
  • Teamwork/Collaboration
  • Professionalism/Work Ethic
  • Leadership

  1. Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: Identify and respond to needs based upon an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information.
  2. Communication: Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization.
  3. Teamwork: Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities.
  4. Professionalism: Knowing work environments differ greatly, understand and demonstrate effective work habits, and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace.
  5. Leadership: Recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals.
