Cancer is a terrifying diagnosis for a patient. Fortunately, we now have many ways to successfully treat patients into remission or even cure certain cancers. In this chapter, you will also be learning about antineoplastic drugs. These drugs are commonly known as chemotherapy drugs. There are various different families within the antineoplastics, including immune modulating drugs. You will learn when these drugs are indicated, how to dose these drugs, learn their side effects profile, and how to minimize those side effects for the patient. The antineoplastic families of drugs tend to be more toxic to the patient, as well as the health care provider handling the drugs, than some of the other drug families. Therefore, special handling precautions will be covered and observed when dealing with these types of drugs. Finally, patient education before, during, and after chemotherapy treatment will also be discussed.
