Assignment Overview

 Through this assignment, which will repeat across the semester with different topics, you will reflect on how your past and current experiences have shaped your perceptions, values, and beliefs.

Your reflections should demonstrate an examination of how learning experiences (formal and informal) shaped you as an individual and a pre-service educator.  You are encouraged to use specific examples to support your thinking. Strong reflections will demonstrate your self-awareness and your ability to question your own biases, stereotypes, preconceptions, and/or assumptions. You may include references to the connected homework reading if it is relevant to the ideas you are writing about; however, this is not required.

 Assignment Requirements

 Reflection should be typed (Times New Roman font), double-spaced, and 2-3 pages (approximately 750 words).

Assignments will be assessed holistically using the following criteria: Clarity, Relevance, Analysis, and Critical Self-Reflection (see rubric). Writing should also be free of errors in grammar and conventions.

Assignment Topic & Guiding Questions

Prior to Reflection: Observation

  • Spend some time observing a classroom. There are several YouTube links below. Select one of the classroom videos and observe the structure, students, and the culture.
  • Focus on how the classroom feels to you (e.g., what do you notice? How do the students interact? How do you feel as you observe?)
  • Take notes in your wondering notebook on how the classroom culture appears to you

 Reflection #3: Classroom Culture

  • Select a picture that represents “Culture”. Think metaphorically and spend some time trying to select a picture that can guide your reflection.
  • Insert the picture into your reflection (does not count towards the word or page requirement)

 Required Guiding Questions:

How does this picture represent culture?

What is meaningful about this picture?

Other Possible Guiding Questions to Consider:

How would you describe the classroom culture based upon your observations?

Did you feel a sense of connectedness between the students and the teacher?

Were you connected to your teachers? To your peers? 

Did the classroom feel safe?

What values were conveyed in the classrooms you observed? How were these conveyed?  

Do you think your teachers made it a priority to build and maintain relationships with you and your classmates? How could you tell?

Relevance: The learning experience being reflected upon is relevant and meaningful to student and the topic of the reflection. Analysis: The reflection moves beyond simple description of the experience to an analysis of how the experience contributed to student understanding of themselves, others, and/or course concepts.  Critical Self-Reflection: The reflection demonstrates the student’s ability to question his/her own biases, stereotypes, preconceptions, and/or assumptions.

Clarity: The language is mostly clear with only minor, infrequent lapses in clarity. Relevance: The learning experience being reflected upon is relevant and meaningful to student and course learning goals.  Analysis: The reflection demonstrates student attempts to analyze the experience but analysis lacks depth.  Critical Self-Reflection: The reflection includes some text where the student began to question his/her own biases, stereotypes, preconceptions.

Relevance: Student makes attempts to demonstrate relevance, but the relevance is unclear to the reader.  Analysis: Student makes attempts at applying the learning experience to understanding of self, others, and/or course concepts but does not yet to demonstrate depth of analysis.  Critical Self-Reflection: There is some attempt at critical self-reflection, but the self-reflection does not yet demonstrate a new awareness of personal biases, etc.
