Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Project
Purpose:
The purpose of the Group Capstone Clinical Integration Project for Quality Improvement is to identify and analyze a nursing or patient care concern, issue or challenge experienced in the clinical setting in relation to one or more QSEN competencies and the implications for nursing practice.
General Guidelines:
- This is a group project that includes a professionally prepared PowerPoint. Refer to syllabus/schedule for due date.
- Groups must email instructor prior to starting project for topic approval. QSEN Change Project TOPIC
- Communication via group members may be done to each groups' preference (i.e. course mail, knights mail, google docs. etc.).
- The project will be graded by the instructor and the grade shared by all members of the project team.
- All projects are realistic and require plausible solutions. References are from multiple current sources must be used to support project.
- Participation is obligatory for the project.
General Outline:
- Background and significance of health care concern
- Conduct a literature review about the problem
- Why is this such a big problem?
- What is the significance of the problem?
- What is the current research?
- Conduct a literature review about the problem
- Identification of one or more of the QSEN competencies referring to the specific knowledge, skills, or attitudes and behaviors. The competencies are:QSEN_Competencies.doc
- Patient-centered Care
- Teamwork and Collaboration
- Evidence-based Practice
- Quality Improvement
- Safety
- Informatics
- Analyze the significance of the health care concern for nursing practice in relation to one or more QSEN competencies from different perspectives
- What and why is it important to explore this concern or issue?
- Identification and synopsis of a case exemplar
- This can be one found in the research or personal example
- Synthesize the nursing implications from recent literature to the specific health care or nursing concern
- Include implications:
- Practice
- What did you conclude was the best or preferred nursing practice for this concern providing justification and evidence?
- Education
- What are the current guidelines for educating staff about patient care or nursing practice related to this concern or issue providing justification and evidence?
- Research
- What are the priorities for further study from a nursing clinical or professional perspectives?

- Include implications:
- References -- Citations must appear at the bottom of every slide if borrowed content is used or it is considered to be plagiarism.
Methods:
- After team collaboration and discussion, each group will identify a critical health care safety concern.
- Using an agreed upon case exemplar the students will use one or more of the QSEN competencies and determine the nursing implications regarding nursing practice, education, and research.
- The topic must be submitted to the instructor via email for approval before beginning the project.
- Once approved, the team will complete a PowerPoint presentation including all pertinent information and submit it by the due date.
- Follow the guidelines and rubric to ensure all pieces of the PowerPoint presentation are complete.
- Refer to the examples and rubric for this presentation.
