BlendFlex is a delivery strategy, not a modality like P (face-to-face) or M (mixed-mode). For example, if you were teaching a course with a face-to-face element, you will be teaching in a classroom at the assigned times as noted in the class schedule.

If your course incorporates the BlendFlex model, each face-to-face classroom session will be live-streamed and recorded for later online viewing for students who did not physically attend. Minor adjustments in teaching practice will need to be made in order to promote an equitable experience for all students, whether they are attending remotely or in-person on any given day.

How Does BlendFlex Work?

There is not a "one size fits all" approach to courses that incorporate the BlendFlex model. It is designed to be flexible, so that it can meet the needs of the particular course, the students, and the faculty member.

Consider this example:

Doctor T teaches a face-to-face (P) course with 150 students that meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3:00. Students overall may decide they wish to come to class or that they need to remain home.

When not physically attending a class session, students are "remote"; they can view the session as it is streamed online, or watch the recording at another time.

Why BlendFlex?

The BlendFlex model is intended to support our students by providing more flexible options that promote the quality and equity of the course experience.
The BlendFlex model provides the foundation for a move to a fully remote learning experience for one person or a whole class, should that become necessary.

Faculty Implications

I will have 100 students in my face-to-face (P) class. Some may decide to come to class and some may decide it's best to attend remote on any given day. At times, we all may need to be remote depending on the circumstances, even if it's just a football game on a weekday!

Professor M
Since I am teaching a mixed-mode (M) class and we only meet once a week, I expect to see all the students for classroom time. Even though this class isn't designated as BlendFlex, I think I will still record the face-to-face sessions for later viewing, in case a student cannot attend in-person for a particular reason. I know that this semester presents a lot of uncertainty and disruption for my students.
