Instructor Introduction
Greetings! Welcome to the History and Culture of South Asia! I am Dr. Deepa Nair and I will be your online guide to history and culture of the Indian subcontinent. I am originally from India, but reached US via Singapore and Germany in 2007. I taught at Appalachian State University, NC from 2007-2011 and joined UCF in Fall 2011.
Being an army kid, I am used to traveling and enjoy exploring new places and meeting diverse people. My nomadic upbringing is responsible for my passion for traveling and also ensuring that I survived the move from Singapore to the middle of Appalachian mountains and now to Central Florida. I have also traveled extensively all over South and Southeast Asia, Australia, parts of Europe and North America.
Buddha, Central Java, Indonesia. Marina Drive, Singapore.
An intersection at Melbourne, Australia. Versailles, France.
Besides traveling, and music, I love animals. When I moved to Central Florida, I adopted a gorgeous Great Pyrenees - Maya - from a local rescue.
I adopted her brother Myshkin from a Great Pyrenees rescue in Texas in 2016.
My research and teaching interests include - modern and contemporary Indian history, South Asian diaspora, globalization, education and curriculum reform in South Asia.
I am looking forward to sharing the history and culture of the Indian subcontinent with all of you. I hope we will enjoy this journey together!
